Plough Depth Wheel.

  The tractor I use for ploughing, my C-121 aka Black Horse, has an electric lift for the rear hitch. Unfortunately it is either up or down, so no control over depth of plough. So a depth/land wheel has been on the cards for a while.

  Yesterday had a scrat round the workshop and came up with some box section, wheel off a walk behind mower and some threaded bar.

 

  Wheel attached to box section. There is actually two lengths of box section. One a good fit inside the other. Makes things a bit stronger. Also left over length.

The arm needs a pivot point. So more box section, the piece of threaded bar and a couple of nuts.

 

The nuts were turned down to fit inside the box section, cut to set the wheel approx' 7" out and using the threaded bar to locate them. Then nuts and bar held in place with split dowels. Ignore the two nuts showing on the box section. They are attached to it and will be removed.

The assembly was the fitted into the plough. Not welded in yet but it's a tight fit. That will be done when I'm happy with things.

After a bit of moving the arm and wheel back and forth, and up and down, I settled on the pivot point.

Couple of washers and locking nuts, and bar cut down. End of bar to tidy up later.

Zero depth.

7" depth. I'll not be ploughing any deeper or not ever.

Next thing is to work out and make an adjuster mechanism. I've a rough idea but need to obtain some bits.

 Started on a depth adjuster screw this morning. I'd obtained some threaded bar from the farm and dug out some bits of bar from the my off cuts box.

 

  First off, I drilled and tapped one end of a piece of 1" round, 12mm. The other end was drilled to suit some 3/8" black. The threaded bar was screwed into the threaded end and then both drilled for a dowel. The black bar was then bent to form a handle. Needs welding in yet.

  Two swivels are needed for the threaded bar to pass through. One with a threaded hole and one with a clearance one. The off cut box once again provided the needed steel. My bench drill will not accept drills big enough to drill the holes I needed, so a little ingenuity was required.

  I faced off both ends of the pieces of bar then swapped the lathe chucks over. Fitting the four jaw. I put a small centre pop mark where I wanted to drill and fitted the first piece into the chuck. I used a fixed centre in the tailstock to centralise the pop mark.

 A centre drill was used first then a 12mm tapping size drill right through.

  The tap was then started in the lathe to keep things nice and true, then finished in the bench vice.

 Below is what I have now. More lathe work to do another day.

Got the swivels finished today. Ends turned down to fit through the arm and drilled and tapped for securing screws.

 

Spent quite some time working out where on the arm to fit one and where about/how to mount the top one. Eventually settled on where on the arm, then rigged up a temporary mount for the top.

Couple off nuts with the corners turned off. To be pinned in position yet.

 I can get down to a depth of 8-1/2 inches and that will do me. I doubt I'll ever plough that deep.

 

 Next job is to make a proper mount for the top swivel and start welding it all together. That'll be sometime next week.

 Got it more or less finished today. After these photo's were taken, I stripped it down, tided up the welds and primed the parts.

Painted and assembled. Now all I have to do is find somewhere to test it.
