Eric, did you know the 682(manual) and 782(hydrualic) were the same except implement lift.

No I didn't.... thanks.

I'm not familiar with the old Cubs at all.

That pic you may remember is my maternal grandparents.

My "grampa" had 2 Cubs as I was growing up.

The other was a normal Yellow and white one.

Here’s a visual of what Jeff indicated...

I owned a 682 and a 782 concurrently a few years back.  The 6 on the right I completely refurbished for my wife to use but she wasn’t a fan of the hand hydro control.

The 7 on the right I only owned for about a year.  I had hoped to make it into a plow tractor but I never was real satisfied with it as a plow machine.

So I sold the 6 and we bought Kelli the 523Dxi that we now call RED.  Then I sold the 7 and I bought the 314-8 which has become GhostRider my awesome plow tractor.

I repowered both of these tractors with Magnum 18’s and upgraded the driveshafts to the late model Cub CV driveshaft.  As Jeff stated, they are identical except the hydraulic lift on the 7.  It would have been cool to have the 5,6,and 7 but I have learned that I can’t keep them all...

My wife suggested we need more room for tractors the other day!  I haven’t yet filled what I have, but I always have the last words in any argument.  “Yes, Dear.”

Okay Kev

Here's what we're going to do

First things first. I want you to calm down and take a breath.

Next, two things.....

1. Most important. Definitely do this first. You go give your wife a nice hug and a kiss and tell her you love her and she's excellent.

2. Jump in the truck and head for the nearest building supply store!!

She also wants me to sell the “new” JD and go buy something better... that doesn’t need so much work.  Sometimes I just don’t understand how I got so lucky...

I feel the same way about mine. Don't ask questions. Just be quiet and do what she says.

I mean really... Kevin. Buddy. Pal. Who are you to go against what your wife wants? Another tractor? Another backhoe? Come on. Just do what she asks and go pick up another machine.

Oh. And, make sure you document the whole thing like you've been doing so us other five year olds can look at all the pretty pictures.

Time to bring this thread up to date!  I finally have something to report on my 582 plow mule:

Kevin @pullstart dangled a hook out there about two months ago about some tires he found on a buggy site.  One of the things that I have come to realize plowing with GT’s is that the standard wheel tractors often battle with clearance issues. After plowing with Clyde (dad’s 953) I came to realize that the extra clearance provided with tall tires is a real positive but it is often hard to accomplish with the limited GT tires available in the AG style.

BECDBA1F-EF1B-43AA-88DF-48B0A0BCA004.jpeg.79f2712bfdf5dbb8dc9c829329e3b5cf.jpeg

After looking into the tires that Kevin shared the link on, I was determined to purchase them and get rolling on this project. They are 27” tall tire on a 12” diameter rim and they look like “real” AG tires.  I opted for the 7.5” wide tire instead of the thicker varieties because I wanted something that would really dig in vs. floating on top.

Next challenge: how to fit that tall of a tire in the space available🤔

BE4FD9C7-5709-4E49-ACD6-9E8BAF7611FB.jpeg.5115054811a96701b0d2f880a1729194.jpeg

I unbolted the fender pan and installed the tires only to find out that I was indeed going to have to space up the fender pan. I chose 1” square tube stock for this task.

I also had acquired a Cat O 3pt on a Cub GT “flip” about two years ago.  I finally dug it out, cleaned it off, primed and painted it.

AC6827D2-6A60-49AB-AA2E-E2D361314661.jpeg.bdc73d438047cf9af4ea174c4e9ae84e.jpeg

It sure looks pretty in the Regal red!  Zach helped me paint and prime it.

While I had the fender pan off to space it up and install the lift bar, I took a picture of the farmall Cub tranny that was in all these old gear drive Cub Cadets. Bulletproof because it was designed for a compact tractor in the 1940’s😉

9A43AB93-6AAD-4885-AF06-C2214E031F81.jpeg.977eb418539d25168ce0348228efe489.jpeg

Once I had the back plate in place and the spacers fabricated, I turned my attention to the front axle.  Cub cadet introduced the Super garden Tractor In 1979 with the 982...this tractors “big brother”.  It had a bunch of heavy pieces on it but shared much of its DNA with the regular GT’s in the lineup.  I had the crazy idea to install the spare Super front axle in place of the standard front axle.

FCDCB4C9-EB55-4380-B163-2AF5BD21512A.jpeg.ffb08ebd38ab1b2fcd9f8f57ef312b08.jpeg

the Super Axle is much heavier and pushes the front wheels out by about 2”.  My main goal was the fact that it gives me about 2” of ground clearance much like I’m gaining with the taller rear tires.  The bonus is that this axle weighs 48# vs the standard axle at 28#.  I sincerely doubt that I’ll be able to break a spindle on this setup!

With the front axle in place, I was then ready to fit the fender pan and hook up the rear electrical.

D2A66BAD-92BE-419F-A56A-60F8E12E3A93.jpeg.482de5e70eb6dc813aa8e5621ccba5ac.jpeg

I dug out my old Brinly Cat O plow.  This is a plow that dates back to about 1969 and looks quite a bit different from those that you normally see.  This is a very crude design compared to the later ones but is still very functional.  I found my biggest problem though, would be to lift the monster plow with manual lift!

0B9663AF-67C2-4F5A-9A6A-8075A0461F3B.jpeg.58fe959f36b54697206577f427319e5c.jpeg

The weight of the plow and the distance behind the tractor created a compound lift weight that was nearly impossible to clear the floor.  I added a strong tension spring which helped some but was still a shoulder and back breaker.

419EB754-2C4C-4F71-86C0-FBC184CDD763.jpeg.a4d24eb932791f544d84b7a904a9df1b.jpeg

I still loaded and took it to plow day.  The original 18hp opposes Briggs still resides between the frame rails as does the original clutch.  Both need some work and I knew this taking it over but I couldn’t stop myself.  I needed to feed this dream that was now becoming a reality!

Some take aways:

1.) those tires are AWESOME (am I right or what Kevin?) since Kevin found them, I’ll let him post the specs and link to them. They are offered in a myriad of sizes but they have deep lugs, tough construction, and look super cool.

2.) extra ground clearance is great!  Both Judge and Caleb took a couple of rounds on this thing and loved it. I had to lift the plow at the end of the furrows for them though.

3.) the Cat O setup gives lots of adjustment potential.  I can’t wait to experiment with this more in the future and share it with you.

4.) this tractor needs a fresh engine, clutch, and hydraulic lift. I also need to add the PeacemakerJack recliner seat 😂. I’ll keep you posted as I get these items together.

5.) this tractor will be a great plowing machine once I get the above items taken care of...

Thanks Eric, I love that pic you posted at the top of this page with your grandparents and the red 682.  My “5” has come a long way in just a few days but is only about halfway from where I want it so end up...😉.

If you ever reach the day that you get sick of owning that tractor go ahead and toss it on a train towards the Northeast and I'll be happy to steward it for you.

Sorry for the late notice, but if anyone is near Fredricktown, Missouri, the 17th annual Cubarama is being held this weekend, starting Thursday, the 27th,  (set up day), Friday September 28, and Saturday September 29.  It's held the last weekend of September each year in Fredricktown and is for the Farmball Cub and Cub Cadet, but basically anything IH related.

Fredricktown is about 80 to 90 miles south of St. Louis.

Will a 12 hp Kohler Magnum horizontal motor out of a Cub Cadet model 1211 fit a Classic Wheel Horse without major modifications?

Yes you read that right I'm a convert, well sort of. I have been into Cub Cadets for several years now and decided to go out on a limb and buy The Wheel Horse Story Book. And to make a long story short I've been bit by the bug. I now have an unhealthy desire for an RJ 35 which is apparently the hardest model ever too find because I've been looking around for about 8 months with no luck. The closest big City to me would be Hamilton Ohio anyone else close to me?
