Pullstart

I mentioned this in the vintage rides thread, but momma got a “new” 1997 Suburban K2500 from Aurora, CO.  Selling her ‘15 LTZ, we made enough money to pay for the new ride and have just $1,100 in shipping costs and PayPal fees.

She works at a factory in town and most people there seem to have no regard for other’s property.  Her last three Suburbans have gotten more door dings than one vehicle should ever get… and she even parks IN THE LINES!

Since she drives but 6 miles round trip daily, fuel mileage is pretty much not a concern.

Today, the first piece of the puzzle showed up.  Or is this the second?  The 6” Superlift is still on the way.  These are 35x12.50-17 (or metric equivalents) Mickey Thompson Baja Boss load range E tires on Vision Manx wheels.

Wait, what about one of the herd with a cab, heat, and a pulley swap for some speed? Park between the lines and the adjacent doors can't even reach!

I’ve tried… well not tried via Wheel Horses… but to convince her that she could get by with less than a Suburban.  The one time in my life I was wrong.  :ROTF:

Right there is a 50” high stack of tire.  One thing I’ll need to think about… is a set of side steps for my short little family members..

So far, our biggest issue has been headlight direction.  It was shining for coons across four lanes to the right and 100 feet high.  We found out how bad they were on our way home from Chicago in a rain storm after dark.  Tonight, I made enough room in the shop to pull a vehicle in and do some adjustments.  Time for a test drive.

Headlights are much better!  I imagine I’ll need to adjust them again soon after an altitude adjustment.

Though they look like Ace Ventura delivered them, these two boxes showed up and the contents seem intact. I believe one or two more boxes are expected, but time to start sorting pieces and fasteners!

most of the added ground clearance… missing shocks and rear lift.

I had a cylinder #8 misfire problem on my truck we call “The Cadillac,” plaguing me.  I replaced the  spark plug, then swapped wires with another cylinder, then replaced the coil, but still no change.  Still #8 misfire.  Air, spark, fuel?  No fuel.  Yesterday, I quick pulled the fuel rail and that injector was absolutely packed full of rust.  A byproduct of old fuel lines, I suppose.  Remember, even though it has all new fuel lines, that truck sat about 4 years.

A little brake clean, compressed air, and an electrical jumper test, it went back in.  No troubles any longer!

Today, the lift begins on the Suburban.

The torsion bars and crossmember are removed.  They will drop below the frame and the transmission crossmember.

LF suspension is hanging, front differential is removed.  Almost time to start putting it back together!

Past the point of no return… turned the hot wrench on and trimmed some unused bracketry.

All front suspension is removed.  Now it’s time to dress the slag areas, prep and paint the frame, then begin reassembly.

Kev - are those original steel wheels riveted? If so, they might have been produced in the Bowling Green, Ky plant I used to work in.

Driver’s side is together.  Need to replace inner tie rod ends, install the torsion bars, put the tires on and eyeball the camber and toe to get to the alignment shop… then start on the rear.

Check that front end out!  :banana-linedance:It’s sitting on the front tires and still on the lift on the rear.  Time to get the rear springs swapped out, then lift blocks!  I need to re-route the driver’s side exhaust down pipe to hook up the front driveshaft.

It’s on 4 tires!  Now, the exhaust crossover and driveshaft are trying to take the same real estate.  Time to play with another “kind if inherited” shop tool.

Weeeeeeeell, I’m not sure yet!  :ROTF:

I’ll likely use my other bender and build some U shaped steps for each door.

      1947 Empire (Jeep) Tractor

The Empire tractor consisted of military power components from World War II-era jeeps. It had a 4-cylinder, 40 hp Willys-Overland engine, a Model T-84 Spicer 3-speed transmission, Spicer transfer case with high and low speeds, Willys rear end, steering column and gearbox. It also had PTO, individual clutch-type rear brakes with a stop provided for parking and a rear belt pulley. The fuel tank and an Empire-style seat were mounted on a large operator's platform (made from Navy ship decking). Its simple, basic gauges (ammeter, oil pressure and temperature), ignition switch and starter button also came from the jeep. The Empire tractor was originally made for exportation in the Lend-Lease Program after World War II.

If I had to mention a couple of things that made the Empire Tractor really unique, one would be the straight bar hitch that pulled from under the center of the tractor (patented) thus making an overturn nearly impossible. The other selling point was, of course, the Willys engine and drive train made famous in the Jeep during World War II. The Empire was a well equipped tractor, very reliable and versatile with its wide range of speeds. Today this tractor draws a lot of attention at shows and is very sought after by collectors commanding higher than average prices.

Well fellas I decided to buy a jeep wrangler as a new toy. I have always been into the off-roading scene since I was a kid. I always loved trucks, jeeps, atvs. Recently a friend of mine traded his mustang for a lifted wrangler and its a blast to go off-roading in or wheeling as they like to put it.

I couldn't help myself and wanted to join in so I bought a 1993 with 153,000 miles on it with a ton of add ons for a great price. It has a 5.5" suspension lift, a 2' body lift and rides on 35" tires. She has 4.56 gears which are awesome for crawling, 4wd low range and 1st gear and you don't even have to touch the gas pedal. It is a 4.0L 6 cylinder engine back by a 5 speed manual trans. The rear drive shaft is a custom cv drive shaft with a slip yoke eliminator. The rear axle is a ford 8.8 limited slip with disc brakes out of a ford explorer. The frame is perfect not a spec of rust and was coated with POR-15.

She does have her fair share of issues but I am working on getting those straightened out! I just had the front drive shaft rebuilt and balanced. I ordered all new extremely heavy duty shocks. I need to fabricate 2 custom rear shock mounts as the "custom" ones that were on it broke off lol. She needs 2 new leaf spring packs in the rear. Some body work. A good cleaning after this weekend. Some fender flares. Etc!

If anyone has any good oh crap off-roading or wheeling stories with their jeeps or pictures please share. After this past Sundays experience I could probably top them lol.

I hope you enjoy the pics and the video my jeep was the main attraction. (I did not edit the video a friend did, so turn down the volume or the music might scare you)
