Great Stallions! The 400's and our 520-8 love work! Keep 'em both!

Just not too fond of TORO.

Beauty. I was not aware of 520 electrical problems. I'm glad I read this here, I just picked one up.

Richmondred, why did you stop working on Onans? Too expensive? To hard to source parts or just tired of it?

I'm looking forward to learning to rebuild one, next year, if I do a complete restore/rebuild on my 416-8.

The parts are very high but available.

As a flathead ford guy I guess I just like cast iron blocks.

Freshened things up a bit with the frame.

Looking good.

Always best to start with a nice clean frame.

Looks great! Frame 1st!

You might like wheel studs too. :handgestures-thumbupright:

What do you do for prep before painting it like that? Obviously you didn't sand blast the whole thing down.

I use to sandblast my parts. Now I

Sand/wire brush down to solid paint or bare metal, use ppg wash, prep/etch, primer, sand, primer sealer, ppg wash, topcoat either base coat clear coat or enamel with hardener.

Not sure. I spend it until it’s done.

If I sell it I will break even for cash out but not labor. That’s just the way it goes.

There are only a few models that are worth the time and expense for me to do a tear down like this.

Im only doing this 520-8 I may do the 58/59 rj.  It depends if I get bored and don’t have any engines on the bench.

Well they sure do look like they're brand new I was always wondering if you get your money back out of doing something like that I was always afraid to spend it because I never get my money back out of it I got probably close to $1,000 in a c 145 that I did but I don't think I could get that for it and I got a 267 just got a brand new deck under it brand new PTO and some other things on it I got close to 800 hundred into that one is 520 that I'm doing now I got about 6 in it so far that's without paint and everything

You certainly can’t buy a quality tractor like the c145 for 1000.00.

if you use it then it’s worth it.

As for your 520, $600.00 you can double that no problem.

You are good with your wheel horse investments.

as for me, I’m only keeping the 520-8 or the 418-8. I just haven’t decided which one will go.

Why do you use PPG wash again after primer sealer? I thought a "wash" primer was to be applied to bare metal BEFORE primer, or am I not correct?

Got it up and running today.

i got stuck with the installation of the wiring for the lift. The directions seem straight forward for Kohler applications but not the onan 520.

I’ll be posting my issue in the Electrical section of the forum.

Thanks to gwest-ca I got the electrical issue worked out. It was very easy once he show me what to do.

Just a few more things to do. All the mechanical work is done. Now it’s making it look pretty with new decals and rubber foot treads.
