Rebuilt starter generator still not charging ?

Recommended Posts

@953 nut @WHX24 HELP!!   I have read stuff, but I think my eyes are crossing.  The generator light is on, and I’m not seeing a charge.  When I poke and prod with my meter, the numbers jump around a million times a second.  I have the reg. Cover off, cleaned the points in there and everything LOOKS ok... but I don’t know what I’m looking for.  The meter is not helping much as mentioned...

Firstly many digital meter get confused by the rapid switching going on in an old style regulator.  Try to use an analog one or a different digital.  Light on means no charge.  Ground the F terminal of the generator while running.  Engine should labor a bit, light should go off and if your meter is reading voltage should go up to about 14. If engine labors but no increase in voltage regulator is bad.  New ones simply do not last as long as teh originals...
