THE ECONOMY GOT ME!

Recommended Posts

illinilefttackle

 Many of you know my situation-I'm retired, but I started working again to help support 2 little grandkids that moved in with me. Well-I'm no longer working-the company I worked for Eliminated my job. Lack of business, cost cutting-call it what you will. I applied for unemployment today-a demeaning task for a guy that was only on unemployment once before in his life. If I get it , it might help stem the tide of bills these little ones can generate. Many of you have hardships too, but you never quite feel the pain til it hits home. Anyone else out there in the same boat?-Thanks-AL

I am self employed, in the construction industry. I install floor covering. My work has been up and down, but fortunately, most of my work is remodel, not new construction. Right now, I have experienced a business surge. I have work scheduled up through April. I take one day at a time, though, because I know that it may slow again. In September, I am "retiring" from floor covering, and starting a job at our church as associate and youth pastor. Not only am I excited about the new job and a change, but it is a steady check, not dependent on customer buying fluxuation.

That sucks Al......... I'm still working at the electric company but I've got enough time in and the age to retire. Also started collecting full Social Security in Nov. Why am I working? We are raising a grandaughter without any financial help from the parents or state. She will be 13 on Saturday.

I'm afraid it got me too. I was put on "temporary lay-off" from my position at an architectural firm last Monday. As of now, I'm supposed to be called back when we get more projects in the office. Many of our clients are still sitting on the fence about investing into new construction projects, or just simply can't come up with the financing from their own banks to fund them. Hopefully a few of them will realize this is a good time for construction due to the fact that the prices of labor has dropped dramatically from the increasing amount of competitive bids. A lot of general and sub contractors are looking for work... but I'm certain you all know that. I've been through this a couple times before, but it's different this time. The want ads are just not there both in print and online. There's a lot of people in my field that are out of a job. Thank God my wife still works (for now  ) I filed for unemployment last week...

Al.....spring is coming.

Go to the U of N.D. and apply for the groundskeeping staff.

They usually always need summer help.

Come fall apply and transfer to the dining hall staff. Pay is

not bad. That is something Kathy used to do. She is now

on staff with the Morris Inn.

Benefits are outstanding.

I also am feeling the pain. I work in maintenance for a warhouse that supplys auto parts to a a manufacturer. I went from anywere from 55 to 60 hr a week down to no OT and now only working 4 days a week. I feel that Im fortunate that Im still getting some work but after you get use to makeing a certien amount of money and you base your spending on it, it hurts. I feel juilty to buy paint and sandpaper for the herd.

I hope and pray that we all come out of this without much lost.

Going to try selling on E-bay some of the things we have around here to help make some money but know that alot of people are in the same boat.

A new Waffle house opened up in our area and had 1600 applications, that is scary.

P.J.

It is one big boat , I got laid off in Nov. I'm in aggregate production "crushing operation" I normally go back in Feb. for maintainance then start production in March. This spring I don't know when or where I'm going to . My former employer is selling one of the crushers. I'm thinking I might have to go back to trucking, did my DOT physical today just in case.

Teddy Da Bear can I ask where you might be? You got my interest when you said U. ND

Jerrell you couldn't collect unemployment in 1983 or now? I got out of the USAF in 1980 after being in 6 years. I collected unemployment from Oklahoma which is where I got out of the USAF. I only collected two checks because I had found work. Maybe each state is different. When I left Oklahoma and moved to NY for work my wife even collected unemployment for that. I don't remember if it was Oklahoma or NY that actually gave her the unemployment checks. You should also have priority when looking for work for the federal government. I was given priority for overhauling B-52s in OKC because of my military service. My wife and I have been very fortunate when it came to work. I'm now retired but my nestegg has taken a real beaten which has been upsetting to my wife. But I keep telling her there are people that have it much worse than we do. Thank God for my pension.

My father was a union carpenter after the war. Work 6 months and unemployed 6 months is what I remember growing up. I couldn't live like that. Today job security is non-existent and the wages stagnant. It's a shame this country is in the shape it's in. It has got to be stressful for the blue-collar worker today not knowing if there will be a job tomorrow.

Al I'm praying for you and your family. But on the bright side, you're a talented and resourceful guy so you should be able to figure something out. Maybe try writing a book about your football days or a history of working for Studebaker?

Here's something the main stream media isn't talking much about in their stories of gloom and doom; One of my four sisters lives in west Texas. Last week when we all gathered for our mama's funeral she mentioned that where she lives unemployment is so low that all the businesses close up by 9:00 P.M. Seems that jobs are so plentiful that not even the illegal immigrants will work the late shifts.

49'r......U of N.D. is short for University of Notre Dame...

I used to work there for my first full-time job way back in

1980. I was the graphic artist for the radiation lab there.

Where I live is in my signature.

I thank god everyday I get to go to work and make another days wages. About 3 years ago I was working in the construction industry. The work schedules became so thin at one point that I almost lost everything. I collected one weeks unemployment the whole time. Fortunatley I found a great job and thankfully even with the current economic slowdown, I've been working and working and working some more. They did however cut my overtime as of March 1st but gave me a very, very, very large salary increase and more vacation time which made up about 2/3 or more of the overtime I was working. I'm the only one that does my job here and I do the job of 3 most days. I pray everyday that this job holds up. It's almost working in reverse of what others are feeling right now. I thought I would have to sell all the toys off and just be thankful for the roof over my head and the food that fills me up but for now I will have the toys for a bit longer although I may still sell just to avoid any possible situations in the future. I cannot complain at all. I feel for all you out there that are struggling but I'm very thankful to be in the position I'm in at the moment and will continue to be thankful in the future if unemployment rears it's ugly head.

I feel for every one too! I live near Lansing, MI our main Industry is cars and the way GM is looking its hurting the economy here in a worst way. I'm a licenced building contractor for the last 24 +years and have owned my on blown & srayed insulation bussiness for 20 years. Use to have 8 trucks on the road with 20 people working. Now its just little old me and a neighbor guy when i need him. Ive sold all my trucks except for 2 and there the smallest of them all. Down sized to where i can't any more. Next will be me a bag of blown in and a straw in an attic now thats thin! there just isn't any work out there. every ones holding on to money tighter than frogs butt. I use to work sraight threw the winter non stop insulating existing houses. but even that has almost dried up. only for a few people who can't stand it with there heating bills. Seems like I look in the local papers and there seem to be a least 8-10 focloses a week! just in little old Eaton Rapids there is 400+ houses for sale and 100 + forclosers last time I heard. Luckly, my wife when things started to gettin bad found job it ain't much but it helps feed us and the kids. Thank heavens for the chickens and pigs we raise or we would probable be hurting a little more. I hate winter here in Michigan especially this long snowy one. now no snow and COLD! Now with the economy and winter It sure does suck lately. I CAN'T WAIT FOR SPRING!! That way i can spend more time out side ( gardening, wheel horse time.) and hopfully work will pick up. Oh by the way I home school our Daughter and she'll be done soon for summer YEA!!!!!!!!!

We just got to keep digging

Maybe one of these days Ill get out of debt and quit having to sell my wheel horse collection to my dad for money when i get short!!

I think I sold 6 tractors in last shortage!
