kinda like a bunch of conversations at the dinner table, or at the bar

I didn't know people still had conversations at the dinner table,   thought it was all texting.      BUT, if there were conversations it would go like this;

How was your date . . . She was boring . . . Yes, I had the cylinder bored 30 over . . .  30,  he doesn't look a day over 12 . .  No, it ain't noon yet, its only 11     :ROTF:

WHX??

@ineedanother Right!?!?!

We were just discussing your bearing madness on a 1045 I have. Split the cases or shove the bearing in.

Concerns about the axles being good on the bearing surface and the fact that the manufactures recommend the bearings be pressed in.

I have pounded them in before I knew any better.

How do you mask them so neatly?  I tried trimming the edges with an Exacto knife, but i could not really see the label through the painters tape, raised label to thin to help.

Thanks!

I drove the old one in first rather than pushing it with the new one. I was able to get a good look a the condition of the axle which was fine. The wall thickness of the driver matched the bearing really closely and I made sure the end was flat and smooth. A bit of Lucas assembly grease and it tapped in with little resistance. I actually prefer it now over sliding the case on with the bearing pressed in.

I did what you just said. I laid the tape right on the top and bottom edge of the decal so I only had to trim 2 sides. It’s far from perfect, but good enough for me.

@WHX?? Someone else had actually mentioned doing this before, maybe @kpinnc, I can't remember. When I looked at how much space is between the inner and outer bearings, it just makes sense if there's no other reason to split the case.

Nice work!  When I did mine, I turned that rod end on the smart steer 90 degrees, drilled a hole in the frame side and snugged it up.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

I used the convenient (but rather large) close by hole in the chassis which I filled with a large penny washer to centralise the new bolt. Smart Steer seems like a great idea but I think it needed a bit more development...it needs to be less effective. In electronic terms, it needs less 'gain'...in mechanical terms, it needs a shorter bell crank! I'm not sure how I'd do it but it's asking for an electronic solution....we could then have variable or adjustable Smart Steer (a bit like the probably over complex systems on my Range Rover!). If anything comes of my foray into fantasy land, I'll write it up here!

Finally mowed with the 520-8 today. She did well!

That is one sharp machine Mike.  I'm glad you were able to repurpose it!

Now you need to have Terry make up some "510-8" stickers!

Tempting …but I have a Mag 14 here that might move onto the 520 frame now that I have all the wiring and whatnot straight.

Another thing I'd like to replace is the 'fat' steering wheel. She said she likes the feel. I'm here typing this so obviously I refrained from comment.

The 'fat' steering wheels have alloy bushes over here....I assume they are similar in the States. I have two 518Hs both with fat wheels and the bushes have distorted with use and the wheels become loose on t...he shaft. I cannot comment on how they got in that state as I bought them both as wrecks...'ghastly' would describe them though. I have rebuilt one of these tractors and fitted power steering so the 'fat' style wheel doesn't make sense as hydrostatic steering systems do not retain their centre. Consequently, I replaced my wheel with a C Series 3 spoke wheel....ok so it's 'thin', but it is otherwise a very nice wheel...and is bushed in steel.

.... I started with coffee as any sane person should.

Loaded the car for the transfer station.

Moved a load of firewood from down back to up front.

Went to the transfer station.

Decided to chip some bark and sticks. PTO disc went bad. Fixed that with an NOS disc from stock.

Did the chipping. Then resting. Then more chipping of branches.

Now resting a bit.

Then .....??

I took this steering wheel of of my 76 C-160 and replaced it with a Fat Wheel because of the arthritis in my hands has lessened my squeezing power. It could use a good home.

All my steering wheels are fat.  These old paws won't close far enough to grip a skinny wheel.

Kinda inbetwixed guys.

One like the original on my 76. Called 'soft-touch' back then. 13".

Or like the one I put on the 05. Also 13"

I just don't care for the bulky 15" guy on the 96.

Of course it won't get changed if the main pilot prefers the fat one. Time will tell. She hasn't tried the tractor since I modified the hydro control but she did say the original was awkward. :)

I wonder if the "Soft Touch was an option. The wheel I have was original to my 76 C 160.

And yes that wheel on that 96 would be yanked off in a second it it was mine. 897109581avatar

Hauled a load of firewood for my Dad today, and then gave the Horse a oil rub down- Devon (England) is super humid, so it keeps the rust at bay!

Very nice too!

Besides not liking the feel it certainly is ugly too.

I don't think the 76 wheel was an option. I would guess that they had some 75 wheels left over and you know how they were. :)
