WHX?? 46,797 #353 Posted April 1, 2018 (edited) Had a quarter of the herd in today .... I was multitasking.. which in WHX16 speak means I probaly didn't get a damn thing done on any of them! Actually got the new to me 1077 stripped down for a power bath and find out what needs to be done to make a daily user. More on that in my 1277?? thread. Dug in the new to me A-81 and aquaint myself with her some. Grand kids sure did like it. Also consumated the deal with my main man @Rp.wh on a trade on this nice little 401 for a 416 trade. Not sure who got the short end of the stick here yet but check out the muff.... may have to throw that on Fleabay.... NOT! AMC RULES 36,945 #358 Posted April 1, 2018 So, in continuation from post #351 above... is the carb, removed from an overnight stint in the Berryman's chem dip. Drilled and tapped for an original air cleaner... May not be the be the best looking carb I've ever done... but, should be very presentable nevertheless. Still haven't decided, might just paint the engine assembly as a whole... with the carb pre-installed...for more of a factory original appearance. 8 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

CountryRock 198 #362 Posted April 1, 2018 Pulled the steering shaft, steering gear and tie rods out of my 244H parts machine. Steering shaft came out much easier than I thought it would. WHX?? 46,797 #365 Posted April 2, 2018 (edited) Did get the new to me 401 running nice today. @Achto and I tried to get it running decent at a tractor show last year but not not much luck. Carb cleaning, points cleaning and gov adjust and runs like a top. Just don't have the facilities at a show. Smokes a little (lot) but what the hay. Think he may have got the short end of the stick! Uh, yeah - the "old stuff" would peel your nails backwards, then remove all the skin in under a minute if you didn't hit it with soap and water. When we got into burnt gear oil and brake dust, a quick dunk in the carb dip and literally run into the wash room to get it off worked great, hands burning like mad all the way. Defintely didn't use that method often. When cleaning a carb, it never took more than 2hrs, no matter how nasty it was. No paint would stand up to the stuff, and anything left in overnight by accident would be reduced to a useless looking metal sponge. Sarge 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I guess my choice of words were a bit harsh... lol @Craig- The only reason I say don't paint it is that you did such a nice job making it nice and clean that it looks great. I only paint carbs when I don't want to take the time to get them that clean. Then after the first time I get gas on the outside of the carb it starts to peel and I say to myself.... Slickbilly-D 40 #373 Posted April 2, 2018 Well, I was tired of the fenders bouncing off of the back tires, and they were already crinkled. I fabbed this overkill prop stop thingy. I know a rubber coated cable would have worked, but I imagined it rattling around and getting on my nerves. I put nylon washers between everything so it won’t rattle. dells68 7,494 #375 Posted April 2, 2018 (edited) I had pulled the deck off of my 68 ranger a few days ago to sharpen the blades and give it a quick repaint, as it was a really deep dark red. I cleaned it up a little - not perfect as this little guy is a worker - and hit it with regal red. Then I decided the replacement tecky on it was faded out a little too orange and hit the shroud too. They both look a little (lot) more red than the rest of the tractor, but I can't bring myself to repaint the whole thing since it has an older repaint that has acquired a really nice patina. The last pic shows how dark the deck was before. Oh, I also put a techy muffler on it to get rid of the bolt on that was blowing toward the hood. Up next will be cleaning the wheels up, painting them white, and mounting my original wheel horse tires, but that will probably be a while. Too many irons in the fire right now.
