Rollerman 290 #3 Posted February 21, 2009 It's no fun Chris. As a roller operator I picked up smokeing to fight the bordom on some jobs. Not cigarettes but Black & Mild cigars. I can remember when they were about sixty cents for a pack of five & last I knew around $3 for the same pack. It got to the point on the long days I could burn through 25 easy in a day. I quit 2 years ago...still have craveings & have occasionally buy a single cigar just to chew on the tip, but I breath a lot better now! As far as tips... I got tired of feeling sick from the constant smokeing, the DR lectureing me about my hi BP. Hang in there!
jerrell 1 #4 Posted February 21, 2009  congrats chris,, i have tried a dozen times and cannot seem to quit, it is getting where i can't even breath right anymore . i have been planning on a quit date for some time now and i had better make it soon, been smoking for 52 years now and guess it's about time,,, i hear if you get a fake cig, something to hold in your fingers it helps a lot, it seems that is a habit also, keep something in your fingers..wish you all the success....

nylyon-(Admin) 7,880 #6 Posted February 22, 2009 The first couple of weeks are the hardest, it will be easier after time. The best you can do is to change your routine, do the things you would do without a cigarette, and avoid the situations where you would smoke. Remember, it's the right thing to do, but not the easiest, by the way, I'm proud of you for taking this step, and at a good age too!

linen beige 15 #8 Posted February 22, 2009 Emphysema took my maternal grandfather in '69. It took my mom's oldest brother in '85. It took my mama on 02-17-09. Her funeral was yesterday. I haven't thrown my Marlboros in the trash yet, but I haven't reached for very many this week. I'll have to wean myself off gradually, but I'm gonna do it. buckrancher 2,694 #10 Posted February 22, 2009 I smoked for 24 years I tried quiting cold turkey many times used the patch nothing seemed to work. New year's eve 2000 I coulded take it any more I had to quit so I tried the patch one more time. I've never smoked sense that night .It was the hardest thing I ever did .You have to choose not to smoke every minute .I use to tell myself ( I could have a cigarette right now but I choose not too) Gum or a lolipop helps some in the begining ( the latter you can hold in your hand) the first six month's are the hardest . I'am not going to sugar coat this for you IT"S HARD! DAMM HARD .After you are off the patch for a week your body will stop craving nicotine .So after that it's all in your head. You have to really really really want to quit and keep telling your self you choose not to smoke. Like the saying go'es (Time heals all wounds) this gets easier the longer you go.It's been eight year's now sense I quit and I will still get a craving for a cigarette once in a while there for a second then gone. You can do this if you put your mind to it It is the best gift you can give yourself and  Just think of all the wheelhorse parts and tractor's you could buy with the money you saved from smoking

wh500special 2,262 #14 Posted February 23, 2009 I wish you the very best in kicking the habit!!! I've never been a smoker so can't relate to how hard quitting would be, but I wish each of you luck in your endeavors. I know my mom was one of those rare people who just one day decided she was finished and stopped, but I can empathize with how hard it is since ANY habit is hard to break and there is a genuine physical-chemical addition to these things. Perhaps a look from the financial side of things will be of some help: I wondered what cigarettes cost, so i did a quick web search and see that $5 a pack in CT looks like a typical price. You guys pay $2 a pack state tax on top of the fed tax of $0.39/pack. So you're really helping the state by smoking. You can bet that BOTH taxes will be going up soon since the bulk of that money is earmarked for Medicaid/health type programs and the current recession is putting a real bind on those programs. (there is a real paradox here about taxing cigarettes...if you raise the price too high then net revenues decrease because people stop smoking. But if you price them too low then more people smoke and eventually need social services to help them with health issues) If you smoke a pack a day at $5 per, you're going through $1825/year on them and contributing almost $900 a year to tax causes. That's a 520-H with 60" deck, a C195, or a nice deposit on a new truck. Put that $1800 each year into a CD at 2%APY for 30 years and you'd have extra $73000 in the bank by the time you retire. (Lord Jason Helmutt, you might want to check my math since this was a back of the envelope hand calc...) Quitting is worthwhile in so many ways! GOOD LUCK!!! catman81056 3 #15 Posted February 23, 2009 I'm sorry to hear about your Mom Jim, I lost my Dad 12/23/1985 the same way. It took awhile but I finally decided to quit. I listened to a subliminal(sp?) tape 3 nights in a row. On April 8, 1987 I thur my cigs in the garbage and haven't had one since. The only "reaction" I had was to reach up to my pocket every so often. I know this may sound lame, but you have to want to quit, period!! I wish you luck, just get you mind set and go with it. dave s 0 #17 Posted February 23, 2009 The wife and I went on the "patch" 8 days ago, we're staying clear of each other right now. Cigarettes are $10.00 a pack, so between the wife and I that's $600.00 a month! :imstupid: Think what that can buy! dave s
Buzz 502 #18 Posted February 24, 2009 Aw come on Guys, quitting is easy. I used to quit 2, 3, 4 times a week Staying off of them is the hard part. Like Tim said, you are going to have to truly want to quit smoking. If you're quitting because people are bugging you about smoking....... you'll fail. If you're quitting to save money........ you'll fail. Only when you truly want to quit because you know it's killing you, then you'll succeed. As far as substituting something else to keep your hands occupied, welll let's just say that every pencil in the house looked like it was attacked by a ravenous beaver Oh yeah, I quit on Sept 22, 1985. Two packs a day to nothing.........cold turkey. It hasn't bbbothered mmme aaa bbbbit.
Iceboy133 0 #19 Posted February 24, 2009 I went on Chantix for about 2 months. It has worked for me so far. No smokes since November 20th last year. Still want one once in a while but it's easier to say no now.

jerrell 1 #22 Posted February 24, 2009  Chris, looks like i will be joining you on quitting , Arkansas just past a 56Cent per pack or product , tax on all tobacco products, along with the national tax coming out shortly that makes a pack here cost 4.50 to 5.00 a pack, also cut me off from taking a 92 mile trip to TN to load up 4 or 5 cartons, can't do that either made it a felony to have over 1 pack and 1 carton in the car.. don't know it it's a blessing or a curse... WTF kind of government stick-it-up-yer-a**, self-serving, liberal right-wing hairbrained kind of law is that? With all the other problems in this world, can't they find something of real concern to worry about? Moderators, please forgive me for the rant and for going , but this just plain burns me up!
