C-175 8 speed with illegible ID #'s

Recommended Posts

4play

I just purchased a running C-175 8 speed that needs some love. The ID tags are there on the deck & the chassis, but not legible.

The 3 blade deck measures 40" blade tip to blade tip. I need a chassis and mower deck ID to reference for parts. Any idea's?

This thing is burning a lot of oil but it pretty quiet. Will a set of rings usually cure the oil consumption?

Any info from the engine's data decal?

Side or rear discharge deck?

Kohler made serial number 12177848 in 1982 so the tractor should be a 1982 or 1983 model.

1982 tractor model 01-17K803 using Kohler Specification number 24200 (Should also be on the data decal)

1983 tractor model 11-17K801 using Kohler Specification number 24223 (Should also be on the data decal)

Same OM (Operator manual) for 1983

This 42" side discharge deck was the model supplied 1981-1983 but older and newer are also a possibility. The blade center hole and the spindle bearings used may be the only way to positively ID it.

Here are the 42" SD models in the order they were produced

5-1010, 5-1011, 5-1012, 65-42MS01, 65-42MS02, 75-42MS01 (Blades up to this point had a 5/8" x 3/4" double-D center hole)

(The following decks used blades with a 3/4" center hole) 75-42MS02, 85-42MS01, 95-42MS00, 95-42MS01, 05-42MS01, 05-42MS02, 05-42MS03, 05-42MS04, 05-42MS05, 15-42SC01, 15-42SC02, 15-42SC03, 78345

This service manual includes maintenance

Pollack Pete

For the smoking problem,I would start out by changing to 30 wt oil.It just may have too thin viscosity oil in it.I've bought smokers before.Upon looking at the oil in it,I swear it was cooking oil. After putting in the 30 wt and running for a while, the smoking stopped. Not always the case, but sometimes.

It appears from Garry's information you have a series 1 KT-17.  If it is burning a lot of oil it may have a lot of hours on it. As Pete said change the oil.

KT 17 Series 1 were not Kohlers best effort.  The lubrication system is weak and they are prone to throwing rods.  I personally would not sink the money into rings on that engine.

I have a Series 1 with well over 2000 hours .  Smokes on start up (mosquito control) but the smoke goes away after a couple of minutes,

Keep her full with oil (maybe a bit over) stay away from prolonged operation on hills and run it till the smoke is intolerable or she dies then replace the engine.  We used to put in some STP as a band aid, guess it wouldn't hurt much especially in your heat.

Thanks Gentlemen,

The oil was fresh & clean when I bought it, but I will try upping the viscosity a little but the inside of the muffler is damp

I adapted a v twin Kohler to my last Wheel Horse 13 plus years ago but the guy that bought the house insisted that it stay with the house.. Machined a ball bearing to fit behind the pulley & run against the case to handle the thrust of the PTO.& it ran extremely well.

What engine would be the most cost effective to build & adapt? I'll be mowing 2 acres of clump grass on level ground about twice a month.

Several here have adapted the Predator 22 hp v twin from Harbor freight.

With only a 42 inch deck and 8 sp vs hydro i would think a 13hp Predator (much cheaper) would be an alternative.

Any K series or Magnum single 12 -16 hp would also work.

The 13hp is certainly sometging to consider, im not mowing thick grass here, just keeping the prairie grass low enough to discourage snakes. Anyone use the 13, curiius about the PTO clutch  thrust and mounting

In addition to the Predator 420cc , I see Duromax.420cc & 440cc. Are these clones basically the same or is there one that stands out?

The duromax reportedly has charging coils & can be had for ~$300 shipped

I'm about to order one or the other & make the swap. The 1" to 1 1/8" ebay adapter is $15 shipped with the custom key

I am not familiar with Duromax...Googled duro max 420 and found some stuff Some thought the Predator was marginally better.  But who knows

I think all these clones are made in the same place and they slap different labels  on them:P

I appreciate all the help, particularly with the chassis & mower deck numbers. That information & the ability to source the parts made saving this old mower a realistic option.

HF has the 13HP engine discounted to $299.99 so I bought one today, The more I thought it through, the more it made sense to go this route.

Thanks!
