C160 Automatic - Springs

Recommended Posts

Rayp

I have been seeking 3 springs for my 1977 Tractor:

Clutch Spring part no.6949

Brake Spring part no. 1230

Lever Spring part no. 9170

without success.

Pats Small Engines listed all the springs, but would not deliver outside of America so I managed to locate a friend in Illinois to whom they could be sent and he would then forward them on to me.  Some days after placing an order I received an acknowledgement.  A week later my money was refunded without explanation whereupon I wrote to ask why and am still awaiting their reply.

I then placed an order with Repair Clinic, who acknowledged my order.  They too later refunded my money, but did explain that the springs were discontinued.

I do have the existing springs which are not in good condition and I am unsure whether they are the correct springs or not.

I should, therefore, be most grateful if anyone can advise me where I might get these springs or what the dimensions of the springs should be so that I can try a spring manufacturer.

If I can locate these springs, would be more than happy toi be an intermediary to get them to you.  Can you tell me for each:

Length.....

Diameter....

A pic of them MAY hel[p..... I have a whole box of springs from parts tractors and surely have the correct ones, although not new.

please followup on this via emails...my email address is:

Just a note - when hunting springs , especially OEM ones - use the wire size/coil diameter/length overall to determine which one it is to best match what should be there if they are missing . It's tough when you don't have the correct/broken spring in hand to hunt a new one as those specs are unknown and not listed in any parts drawings/lists that I'm aware of . This is where the forum comes into play - you'll need someone to remove an existing spring off the same model to get those specs . Tape measure is fine for length/coil diameter but wire size requires a pair of calipers or a wire gauge , both of which are really good to have around when working on these tractors (as well as other things) . Putting the wrong spring in certain places will cause issues , such as the brake return centering spring , drawing #6-05 above or the belt tensioner spring #6-25 . You can do some investigation/experimenting with different sizes/wire gauge and get them close , but the OEM original parts are pretty high quality and engineered to work correctly , or at least that's been my experience . I spend spare time hunting the net and various sites with parts lists for every tractor I have to obtain NOS replacement parts stock to keep around - it's saved my butt more than once to be able to swap out a broken wear item quickly and get back to work . Just something to keep in mind , I don't trade/sell very often and tend to keep my various models for a very long time here .

Hello Sarge

Tanks for your note which is very helpful.  I did think that 'near enough was not good enough' and you have confirmed it.

Thanks for the Information Garry.
