porschpow 7 #1 Posted May 16, 2017 So I was tightening the blade to the spindle and I had noticed there was some play when I tried to move the tightened blade up and down (shown in the pic) This normal?
pfrederi 17,168 #2 Posted May 16, 2017 no should not be any play if the appropriate washers are used and spindle nut tight
daveoman1966 3,621 #3 Posted May 16, 2017 Should be NO PLAY at all.... where is your pic? ? ? ?
pfrederi 17,168 #4 Posted May 16, 2017 In addition the spindle bearings if the deck shell is compromised, rust, cracks etc. that can lead to play
porschpow 7 #5 Posted May 16, 2017 I can't upload pics I know there's a nut UNDER the blade when you take the blade off and a under the other side on the pulley for the belts. I guess I can tighten those. But the deck looks in good shape as well as the spindle
porschpow 7 #7 Posted May 16, 2017 If I pull up vertically on the blade there is a tiny bit of play
dcrage 621 #8 Posted May 16, 2017 There is a very thin washer on top of each blade on my 310-8 (37" SD) and 418-A (42" SD). Do you have those?
Tankman 3,515 #9 Posted May 17, 2017 I usually keep several thrust washers in my Kennedy tool box. Sounds like you need a few. http://qbcbearings.com/BuyRFQ/ThrustB_Washer_SL_SB_I.php
porschpow 7 #10 Posted May 17, 2017 Yes I have a thin washer on the outside of the blade and a thicker washer on the other side. Thrust bearing? So, should I put an additional washer on the top of the deck or by the blades?
cleat 4,990 #11 Posted May 17, 2017 (edited) 42 and 48 inch deck parts manual bolt lengths shown.pdf Above is an exploded view of a spindle. #33 is a thin washer. #29 is a thick washer. Edited May 17, 2017 by cleat fixing double post
porschpow 7 #12 Posted May 17, 2017 Ok yes I have both of those, but tankman referred to a thrust washer. Where would I add it? If that would eliminate the play?
cleat 4,990 #13 Posted May 17, 2017 Well, all the parts to a spindle are shown. If you have everything shown in the exploded diagrams and both top and bottom nuts are tight then either your bearings are bad or spindles are worn.
porschpow 7 #14 Posted May 17, 2017 Gotcha! I guess I will take a look at the spindle, going by the DWG on one of these threads it doesn't seem like a pain in the butt to do. Where does anybody get parts for these classic rigs? I take it a spent bearing is easier to replace then a spindle
porschpow 7 #15 Posted May 19, 2017 Someone here said 1/8 inch play is normal.
pfrederi 17,168 #16 Posted May 19, 2017 (edited) The only 1/8" play I can think of on a Wheel horse is the in and out movement of the rear axles....There should be no free paly in a spindle. Edited May 19, 2017 by pfrederi
porschpow 7 #17 Posted May 19, 2017 Dang it! Well I tightened and greased everything up that I needed to. I guess after cutting the grass this time, I need to take the spindle apart and inspect the spindle since it must be a worn bearing. Where do you all go to get parts for the Wheel horses? gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,511 #18 Posted May 20, 2017 Looked back but don't see where the deck has been identified. Depending on the model/age there where different spindle assemblies used. I think this was the last design and the bearings are a common standard available from any supplier. This was a previous model to the above one Once you open the links you can click on a small illustration of the spindle assemblies used and it will enlarge. porschpow 7 #19 Posted May 22, 2017 The model number is 78360 for my deck on the 520 Hydro Wheelhorse
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,511 #20 Posted May 22, 2017 The 109966 ball bearing is a very common 6203 bearing available from any bearing supplier. .669"x1.575"x.472" (17mmx40mmx12mm) A 6203-2RS has 2 seals and often less expensive that bearings with one seal because of supply and demand. Just pop out a seal on each of them and install with the remaining seals facing out. Garry
