jerrell 1 #1 Posted January 27, 2009  you guys building all those very nice workshops have made me envious and if i work on anything it has to be nice outside, so i got to thinking of an alternate way to get added storage and a small workshop that i could heat and COOL in the 100 degree temp we have in the summer, i came up with this and bought two of them for 250.00 delivered, gonna knock the landing gear and back axels from them and set them side by side and connect them together, i have a lot of windows from an old motor home that i haven't used in a number of years, the ac, sink, bathroom and refridgerator would go into it also, they are 8 by 53 feet long, very easy to convert. wife is already planning the shrubs around the outside.. a little paint and a little hard work and i think i could make them work pretty well, just looking at the undercarriage they should be between 4 to 6 inches off the ground , have to make a small runway for entry. could possibly make some of my money back off the scrap iron back axels and landing gear..
CasualObserver 3,411 #2 Posted January 27, 2009 Looks like good old American ingenuity at work there! Keep us posted on how it works. Good price on the old trailers too.
Michael Bullington 5 #3 Posted January 27, 2009 hey jerrell dont feel lonely im usally outside or borrowing our parking garage attached to our home. (I get in trouble when the exhaust fumes get in the house). I love the ideal . ..wish I had one, but I dont think my neighbor restrictions will like it
Nick 13 #4 Posted January 27, 2009 That was a heck of good price and delivered on top of that. Ive looked at some smaller box truck bodies but yet to drag one home. Good thing our little village has no zoning.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,599 #5 Posted January 27, 2009 Jerrell, Good price on those. I have also thought of this, but I haven't found anything close to the deal you got. Be sure you give us some pictures, during and after pics.
Old Iron 0 #6 Posted January 27, 2009 Nice job! They are worth more than that in scrap metal...
Teddy da Bear 11 #7 Posted January 27, 2009 I have seen lots of those kinds of trailers and boxes from trucks around here and in the back of most car trader magazines. My friend down the road has two also. But he kept the wheels on them. With the wheels, the township does not consider them a permanent fixture and therefor not taxable. The only thing he has to watch for is that they are not licensed and could be considered an "eye sore" or "blight" by neighbors should they want to complain about it. BairleaFarm 340 #10 Posted January 28, 2009 That seems like a GREAT price. Ive thought about getting a couple of the 20'ers. If your taking the axles and stuff off id say you would make your money back plus some if you sold them.
KyBlue 655 #11 Posted January 28, 2009 I think I would have started with Oversea containers.. We cut a few overseas containers up last year, made some pretty good $$ as they are ALL metal.. Look forward to seein what you do to em! As A Side note...I picked up a 28 Foot Reefer Trailer, with curb side door, and hyd Lift gate... I plan to put a few windows in, frame up the inside, and I'll have me a nice trailer to take to Races, or use on vacation... with the reefer, its got A/C, the lift gate can be left extended and up, so its got a porch... Kinda redneck, but hey..paid 1200 for the trailer... even if i spend another couple grand on it... Still WAY less than a camper. Sorry to Hijack yer thread!
clintonnut 126 #12 Posted January 28, 2009 Good Idea. Even if you scrapped them all of that aluminum is worth $$$. I wonder how many million miles are on them!!! I dont see many dents on the sides from the cargo bouncing around. Charlie
linen beige 15 #13 Posted January 28, 2009 I think I would have started with Oversea containers.. I picked up a 28 Foot Reefer Trailer I think I would have started with Oversea containers I might know a guy pretty interested in one of those containers...... I picked up a 28 Foot Reefer Trailer That's a fair amount of reefer, but you can stuff more into an old gabage truck if the packer still works.
jerrell 1 #14 Posted January 28, 2009  these were used to haul pallets (wooden) to shipping companies, a little banged up on the inside but the floor is ok, plan to put 1/8 paneling up the sides, run air water and electric down one side. they have a wall strengther every 2 foot that a plastic wall board screwed to them now, no containers around here but there is a company that has converted all their 35 foot trailers for the 53 feet and they was scraping them out , then found they could sell them went from 100.00 to 1500.00 in about 3 months. that's where i got the ideal, but wanted longer ones, was lucky, found them about 20 miles away but can't get them delivered for at least 2 weeks, the weather here is lousy, yesterday was sleeting , freezeing rain, this morning sleet, rain, snow, but 34 degrees not sticking and no buildup except in the tree tops, but i just missed the freezing ice of north AR, 125.000 people lost their power, right now it is just mushey mud outside and sun shineing. the biggest problem will be jacking it up, cutting the axels and landing gear off and them letting it down on the ground, any ideals???????? got two 20 ton hyd jacks.. bmuone 15 #15 Posted January 28, 2009 Hey Jerrell leave the wheels on one of the trailers. Then you can paint it like a bread truck, go North, load up all the WH tractors, parts, and implements that you can fit in it and come back before anyone knows you were there!!! You might think about putting one of them under ground. Then when the summer storms hit you can go under and work on your tractors. Good thing you are retired with all those ideas you keep coming up with.......Dayton
jerrell 1 #16 Posted January 28, 2009  Yeah Dayton, maybe you and i could get together and start at T-MO's and hit all those guys stable in IL and come back trru Oh, IN, Ky and Tn, might just get a load of them :horseplay: Yup loving this retirement, still up at 5 every morning
Duff 206 #17 Posted January 28, 2009 That's a fair amount of reefer, but you can stuff more into an old gabage truck if the packer still works. Uh, Jim....do I detect a little humor from "the job" creeping in here? Duff
linen beige 15 #18 Posted January 29, 2009 Uh, Jim....do I detect a little humor from "the job" creeping in here? Duff This article might answer some questions for you Duff. http://www.sarnia.com/groups/antidrug/rltychck/mafia.html I grew up in Marion county Ky. I went to school with almost every one of the guys refered to in this article, AND the leaders that never got caught. I know the now former KSP detective spoken of. They mention that the potency has risen. The highest percentage of THC ever documented came from a Marion county crop. When the average "high grade" was in the 7% range some was found there that yielded 28%. Lest I sound as if I'm too far I know of some semi trailers used as grow rooms. If'n them there grow lights hadn't run up his electric bill and KSP hadn't noticed them heavy guage wires running down into the ground, he'd a never been caught. What's a used intermodal freight container bring? Not makin' fun of the 28 footer at all! I could use one myself.

Jerrel I'd sugest either cribbing it with blocks & remove what you want while lowering it a little at a time pulling blocks as needed. You'll need help & be safe...very SAFE!! Another idea & probably safer would be to look into a local contractor or farmer with a front end loader W/forks or an off road forklift. You'd be able to have it done in a few hours time I bet plus be able to position them as needed. Looking forward to seeing pics when your done though!
dave s 0 #23 Posted January 29, 2009 Can you just imagine what Ian (The Thingy) could do with those two trailers? dave s
jerrell 1 #24 Posted January 30, 2009  Yeah Stephen, thought about blocking it up, cutting everthing loose and having a big backhoe pick it up and place it, the main thing is getting the two back ends very close together and streight across the back side, i will have to get the man delivering them to do a split delivery one a week, gives me time to get one on the ground before the other is brought out.. goood suggestion , and i will be especially safety minded , don't want to get squashed double blocked with safety blocks added.. useing cross-ties cutoffs, green oak, that ought to hold it up, no cinderblocks here.
Rollerman 290 #25 Posted January 30, 2009 Thanks for mentioning oak Jerrel....by no means did I mean cinder blocks. Cribbing is kinda a generic word around my work when blocking equipment up for work or loading....always heavy oak boards or blocks are used.
