Buzz 502 #6 Posted January 28, 2009 Down here in the frozen tundra of South Jersey we are buried under at least 1/2" of snow. Heck, even my male daschund didn't leave a 5th track I got the old broom out and swept the drive. Have fun up north.
BairleaFarm 340 #7 Posted January 28, 2009 its a big fat mess here in Central KY. I think we are now in a state of Emergency(so i heard) snow. Icing all night and more snow tomorrow. It was a heavy snow and the b100 dint like it this morning.
linen beige 15 #8 Posted January 28, 2009 We only got about a half inch or so of snow on the west side of Lexington before it changed to freezing rain, but there's over three inches of ice on the ground. I stepped outside a moment ago and could hear trees breaking up all over the neighborhood. I also saw flashes from a couple of transformers shorting out. I cut down all the threatening trees in my yard after the storm in '97, but three of the neighbors trees are bent over our fence with the tops nearly on the ground already. One is right at the front of my truck and the other two are over the bed. There is no way I can move the truck. We might get a few inches of snow on top of this tomorrow.
MaineDad 87 #9 Posted January 28, 2009 Just watched the local weather - revised to 24" of snow today and tonight. Two to three inches of snow per hour possible I'll try to get my son to make a video of the snow removal...

Still stuck with a walk-behind snow chucker for this season, but next year........ :horseplay: Thank God no ice with this one. Jim - good luck, my friend! Coadster32 793 #12 Posted January 28, 2009 On the coast of CT, we got 5 inches of snow, but now it's raining. It will be very heavy to move after work, and I'll need a poncho. Hope the Charger12 is up for the task.
Old Iron 0 #13 Posted January 28, 2009 I'm a little bummed. They changed the forcast to 3-5 then freezing rain, then all rain by this afternoon. It already started raining at about 11:30 today. The snow was really heavy and the tractor had to work to push it, but never missed a beat!! I was looking forward to a nice deep snowfall. Any way, here are the pictures as promised. I am soaked to the bone. You can see my Carhart is drenched. I was frozen when I came in. I did my own driveway after I did my elderly neighbors first. MaineDad 87 #14 Posted January 28, 2009 Nice pics. Love the hype of snow forecasters! The only job in the world where you can be wrong all the time and get to keep your job. Thanks for posting the pics!
linen beige 15 #15 Posted January 29, 2009 We got about 3 1/2 to 4 inches of ice and the power went off around 3:30 A. M. It came back on from 7:30 to 10:00 and has been off since. It started snowing around 10:00 A.M. and we got just over 2 inches in a half hour (snow flakes nearly as big as my hands!) before it stopped just as quickly. Well over half a millon customers in Ky. without power. That's most of the state. Yet I can see lights on a mile or so from the house. My Generac has been humming since 11:00 A.M. It sure is convenient but I don't like the keeping it fueled part. The whole area looks like a war zone with trees and power lines down all over the place. Our city crews were out with the plows until daylight and then changed over to cutting and removing debris. They are saying we may not have power for five to eight days. During the last big ice storm of 2003 my power was off for eighty hours and I was one of the early ones to get it restored. I got a bit of time in with the old 702 today (No pics) and I can say that she really doesn't like the ice packed stuff AT ALL! The trees hanging over my truck (and the back of one of my old T-Birds) are still "hanging in there" and I can only hope they don't snap off. Hope all you other guys are fairing well. KyBlue 655 #16 Posted January 29, 2009 Hey Jim, glad to hear you got a backup...so you can keep warm, and post! I had to spend yesterday and today driving in it... Ugh! You know..If your facility is running on the backup generator... SEND THE PEOPLE HOME!! But Noooooo Ended up getting stuck on the way home, had a issue with a detour that I was forced to take by Lex. PD... However, Myself as well as another drive, and two Companies will be taking the issue up with lexington PD as to WHY they detoured Semi Trucks down Berea Rd...with the trees down, and Ice pulling most of em lower...Not CoOL! Ended up getting stuck, which shut the road down, caused issues, angry drivers, the LPD Just kept sending em down the detour.. Never actually came out the road to offer help even after a call to 911... Okay I vented...
linen beige 15 #17 Posted January 29, 2009 Scott, The "knowledge" that most of the newer, college "educated" recruits displayed in the real world on an hourly basis is one of the main reasons I retired when I did. Glad you got home ok.
jusjeepn 59 #18 Posted January 29, 2009 Jim, we sent crews east but not south. I was not fortunate enough to make this trip, but as more and more outages crop up I still may have a chance. I know the crews are working hard to get you back on and I know you understand that. Just think, in 4 months you'll be running around in your shorts mowing grass! Stay warm and be safe!! Coadster32 793 #19 Posted January 29, 2009 It was wet and heavy in southern CT also. The charge 12 did pretty well. It was real heavy. I did have a problem though. I'll start a new thread on this, but it entails the plow.
