Quick Question: Bolt Size Shift Plate (covers)

Recommended Posts

T-Mo

The manuals mostly show the part number, but not the size of the bolts used to mount the shifter covers/plates to the tractor.  I think they're 1/4 x 20, but not sure, nor am I'm sure of the lengths.  Item 14 on the image.  I may go by the hardware store on the way home and pick some up.

1/4 20 x 1/2 inch work.  i tend to use flange head versions they are less like likely to loosen up (I use 5/8" long)

I use 1/4 and 5/16 serrated heads for just about all the sheetmetal connections

Might want to get some of those #15 clip nuts right away Terry, mine have a way of rusting up.

My C-121 has those screws.  Phillips head. The parts manual shows 1/4-20 x 5/8 for item 14.  Part no.910837.

The older ones have 1/4-20 with a 3/8 head instead of 7/16...

I too use the SS Phillips head screws; 1/4-20 x 1/2 or whatever. Always stock at Lowes.

Large flat head. Not the little screw heads.

Item #15 is also stock, on the shelf at Lowes.  Never-Seez on the screw threads! :handgestures-thumbupright:

Because both items are inexpensive, change 'em both.

I use SS 1/4"-20 Hex-head screws and SS washers to attach the sheetmetal when I redo a tractor. Stainless looks good but is only as strong as a standard screw or bolt so don't use it where you have a Grade 5 or better bolt..
