ACman 7,639 #26 Posted March 13, 2017 (edited) Growing up in the 80's here in Michigan there wasn't much NASCAR tv coverage (I watched it when it was aired) and I was a big fan of Indy . Rick Mears was my hero, he could win races and he had a Chevy engine (don't care much for the pennzoil sponsor) . When Chevy left Indy I found NASCAR . Went to my first race in the early 90's , what an experience ! The people , the smells , the noise , the rubber on your clothes and of coarse the rivalry between Earnhardt and Gordon . That's when racing was racing , no cookie cutter . After NASCAR went with the "car of tomorrow" and the super stringent rules placed on engine specs , everyone might as well be driving the same car (IROC) . Loosing the rules of engine specs (cap the displacement and use stock base blocks) , use factory based real cars , let them duke it out after a race , (who cares heck kids watch MMA) just keep it kind of clean on the track (there has been some pretty close calls of almost killing someone , Brad and Matt come to mind) . A bump and run is fine (rubbing is racing) . Go back to the original points system. Narrow some of the 2 mile tracks (Michigan's backstretch is way to wide) . Add some more road courses , short tracks, heck even a dirt track just , let these guys race real cars and the rivalry run between them bring back the fans . I can hardly watch anymore because it's so boring . Edited March 13, 2017 by ACman

What a joke... If you can't handle the noise stay home, If you can't handle the fumes stay home. If you can't handle the fact that it is a dangerous sport and that someone might get hurt, or worse, stay home. If you can't handle the fact that my driver might spin yours out or vice versa then stay home. If you can't handle the fact that drivers sometimes in the heat of the moment will take a swing at each other then stay home. If you can't handle the fact that your driver MIGHT NEVER WIN, then stay home! Now, my wife can't stand noise and she is all about trying to please everyone. She grew up in a racing family with a Dad who built engines and carburetors for many of the locals who raced at our local track here in Danbury CT. The Racearena. She started going to the races before she was even able to walk. When I told her about Nascar's latest bright idea her first comment was, oh brother, races are supposed to be loud! I have a funny feeling Nascar might be getting some pressure from its new sponsor, Monster to quiet the cars down. I bet its the corporate sissies that are whining about the noise.... I'm done for now. Given the sharp decline in attendance and viewership apparently a lot of people are following your advice 4 hours ago, Ken B said:

squonk 43,606 #29 Posted March 13, 2017 I agree about the noise. That's what I love about Indy. The noise is incredible The old Offy's , Cosworth's ,early gen. Chevy's, and a few stock blocks back in the day were music to my ears. Nascar did have a noise issue in the late 80's. The Buick V-6's at 9000 rpm would split your head open under the roof at Martinsvile. The 8's didn't have the same pitch. I think I still have a few loose fillings from there.
Lee1977 7,170 #30 Posted March 14, 2017 NASCAR has been trying to kill racing for years with their rules, Maybe they have finally got it done.
