252-H Startigng Problem

Recommended Posts

Hello Wheel Horse Members,

I hope somebody can help, Well I just purchase a $100 good conditon 252-H Wheel Horse ( my first Wheel Horse ) with the Kawasaki engine in it, then I found this great site that make me want to restore the Wheel Horse to shine again.

Well, when I got the WH it did not have a battery in it.

Brough it to the shop - jump it and starts right up.

-spray some WD-40 on some rust spots

-drive it around in the snow for about 5 min

-change the oil, clean the carb , starts and runs great

-put new battery and leave the shop for two days.

-came back to the shop try to start the WH - won't start

-it seems like there's no power going into the starter

-lights work, igniton won't crank the starter

Do you guys think it's the ignition?

Did I burn something while leaving the new battery hook up, since it didn't have a battery in for a long time?

Hope somebody can help..

Hi, .

You don't see too many of the 200 series here, but trouble shooting it should be about the same as other Wheel Horses. Here's the wiring diagram:

Here's the starting circuit:

252-h_start.jpg

And finally, here's the charging circuit:

With these diagrams, trouble shoot the electrical system. It could be a ground wire, though, or a corroded connection. Good luck.

Thanks for the schematic, since there not many 200 series maybe I should look for 500 series..

You might take a look also at the safety switches. As I look at the starting schematic, the pto switch and the neutral start switch are both between the ignition switch and the solenoid. If you don't have the pto disengage, nor if you don't have the tractor in neutral, it will not crank. Also, if one of them is bad, it will prevent cranking. I'm betting you must have left the pto engaged or you don't have the tractor in neutral....but I'm just guessing.

Terry beat me to it.... Safety switches are a big culprit for me!

Not being familiar with that model.....is there a clutch pedal

safety switch or a seat safety switch? You buns have to be

in the seat and your foot depressing the clutch pedal or it

will not start.

Got on my B-100 yesterday and would not start.

Already fixed the safety switch on the clutch pedal.

But thought it was acting up again. Got tired of it

and bypassed it. Still would not start!

So I pulled the connector for the safety switch on the

PTO lever... Looked ok and put it back in.... Started

right up!

So you can see.....the contact surfaces of these switches

"if not perfectly clean" can cause starting problems. And

you will not even hear a "click" either.

Just wanted to emphasize the need to really go through those

switches....

Good luck.....keep us posted .....and yeah!

Mike,

Study the schematics above. The seat switch is in the spark circuit, i.e. it will crank, but there will be no spark.

Another culprit here might be the fuse.

Those are very nice schematics...

What website do they come from?

They do not look like from the toro site.

They are from the Toro site - for almost all Wheel Horse tractors, from about 1985 up you can download the Demystification Manual. Here's the cover:

Here's a direct link to the Demystification Guide. I downloaded it and saved it to a disk. Whenever I need a page I just print that page. It's 523 pages long and to print the whole thing would use a whole lot of paper and ink. It would probably be cheaper to buy the paper copy from Toro........

Thanks for the help everybody. I got it started, it was the ignition switch.

I rig in a push start to the WH and start right up. I might just get a replacement ignition though.

Currently, I am taking the WH apart for some new paintjob.

I will post up some progress picture soon.

I have a question though, is there a seperate belt the goes on the PTO pulley to the mower deck pulley?

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
