FatJackDurham 318 #1 Posted November 22, 2016 Does having a solenoid for the starter have any impact on having a breakerless ignition? IN the manuals, the diagrams all show a coil, condenser and points with solenoid. I don't see a diagram for a 10 or 15 amp breakerless diagram. I know that a solenoid is for the starter, but I don't know if it also had a bearing on the ignition.
oldredrider 2,547 #2 Posted November 22, 2016 The solenoid has no bearing on the ignition other than to activate the starter.

Starter solenoid has nothing to do with ignition just as ignition has nothing to do with the charging system. But they all interconnect at the key switch and then the battery To my knowledge the "breakerless" ignition just replaces the points (breaker) and condenser on K Kohler. Might be best to explain what engine and what you're doing or having a problem with.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,503 #4 Posted November 22, 2016 There is a wiring diagram here that may fit the bill What is your tractor's model and serial number? Some of these models originally used a heavy duty ignition switch that is no longer available. These did not require a solenoid but if a lighter duty ignition switch was used as a replacement a solenoid was added. Adding a solenoid for use with a HD switch would extend the life of that switch. Breakerless ignition is self-powered. The ignition terminal is simply grounded to the chassis to shut the engine off. Do not allow any battery voltage into the ignition wire. That will release the magic smoke. Garry
953 nut 51,768 #5 Posted November 22, 2016 These two diagrams will show the differences, first is Magneto, second is battery ignition. (not for any specific tractor)
