Cable High Speed Internet

Recommended Posts

T-Mo

In my seemingly endless search for high speed internet access at a decent price, I ran across this:

With Charter High-Speed

Terry,

I have Comcast high spped, and have been really happy with it. It's been reliable and fast. I have 3 computers running off the same modem through a router. Even with all 3 computers running I see no change in speed.

Hi, T-Mo!

I have cable internet with Comcast, which looks from the web site link you gave to be our local equivalent of Charter. I've got really good speed and reliable service. My price seems to be about what they're offering you. It ain't cheap, but the alternative is going back to dial-up which was slow to say the least!

I only have one machine on at a time, so I don't have a router. I am thinking of going wireless, however, so I can run my laptop out in my workshop which is 40' away from the house. When I ran the utilities underground to the shop I wasn't thinking far enough ahead and only ran power and a fairly low-grade cable for TV - not "clean" enough to carry a computer signal. :D

Hey T-Mo

I have DSL ultra and it does everything I need without any slow connections...I pay with taxes right at $40....I agree the $55 sounds alittle steep...An extra $15 a month for Wheel horse parts :horseplay:

Unfortunately, DSL isn't offered in my area, and we probably won't see it for a while. So, up till now, it's only been satellite internet that's been available. I wasn't aware that Charter Cable had a line in my area until now.

Thanks, guys, for the input. Now if I can just find info on how reliable Charter's service is and how good their customer service is.

I used to have cable but switch to DSl because it was cheaper. Wish i hadnt done it, miss the speed. If you network you will need another router. The one on there modem, typically, only has one output. Im not sure about the price because ours were bundled with out cable.

maybe different areas work different than others because....my DSL has a home wireless network..which runs my pc wireless and other laptops, my direct TV on Demand feature, which downloads entire movies and my PS3 which downloads games and movies also. The DSL handles all this no problem..Honestly I would be hard pressed to pay $15 dollars more for cable when I dont have a speed issue.

One thing to consider with DSL..There are about 5 different levels of speed to choose from, but not all levels are offered in certain areas. So if someone is getting a slow DLS compared to cable it might be the level of service that is offered in their area. :hide:

:hide: they don't offer dsl in my area nor cable, i was thinking of hughes net, satalite, cost 65.00 plus about 400.00 to get started. i may have to stick with dial up for now, i live 30 miles from Little Rock, and don't have dsl, my brother lives in a small town (150) in southern AR, in the middle of the boonies and has dsl ,, go figure, :D

I had Charter but dropped it becasue of the price. I now have DSL through AT&T. Cost me $21 less a month and don't really see a difference in the speed. At least not for my needs.

If only DSL was offered in my area. :hide: I compare the speed of the basic cable service and to get that with DSL I have to move up a few packages. But, again, it's a non-issue as there is no DSL available here.

Jerrell,

I can get Wild Blue and Starband satellite for about $49 for the basic package - but I'm not sure at what speeds.

Terry, with the current technologies available in your area, the cable modem is the way to go for you. It is far better than Satellite, and most cable modems are better than DSL.

Not only can you use a router with your cable modem, but you should use one. Using a router will provide a hardware firewall to prevent hackers (not eliminate) from getting to your computer. Even if you have just 1 computer attached to the internet, use a router.

5 meg speed is a good speed. It isn't as fast as your work internet, but you will be very pleased with being able to stream audio and video. Keep in mind that 5 mbs is the download speed, you should check the upload speed as well which is usually much slower.

About the price. Not too bad, and you can consider this if you wish. With a cable modem you can get an internet telephone for about $25 / month which gives unlimited calling to the US. I don't know what your phone bill looks like, but that is not a bad deal. With my VoIP phone, if I have a power failure, all calls are automatically forwarded to my cell phone. The quality of the VoIP is pretty good as well, in fact any time we spoke on the phone, that was VoIP.

I personally would jump at the Cable modem, even at a $55 monthly rate.

Terry I have Charter only for internet. I have Dish for TV and my local phone company. (yes... some of those do still exist!) Charter's pricing is fine in package deals and on promotions, but yes, regular individual service pricing is high. (helps push you to use their packages which of course makes them more money.) I had DSL and had nothing but problems with it. Could have been the old phone lines that have since been replaced with fiber optics, but I'm not switching back to find out. I did see a noticeable speed change between the two, but that's irrelevant since you'll be switching from dial-up and ANY speed increase will be substantial. I've used Charter for somewhere between 2

Terry,

My dad in Alton, IL has the entry level Charter cable internet thing and he's happy with it, but I notice it is FAR SLOWER than the DSL line I have here in Hoosierland. He was told that local traffic on the cable line from other users can slow it down some. I realize DSL isn't an option for you though.

Reliability wise, dad has never lost service that he knows of. And realistically it is way, way faster than even the best dialup connection.

He still keeps his regular AT&T phone line and has TV through Dish Network.

When I was shopping for a satillite service I think Direct TV offered satillite internet. It was expensive, but when bundled with their TV service wasn't too far out of line with mixing and matching from other providers.

Until DSL became available here as a consequence of the county library temporarilly moving to my town after a fire destroyed their building, some of my neighbors had a local wireless provider service. Not sure anything like that is available in your area, but it was simply an office in one of the towns with a high speed connection to a hard line who had installed a big-azz antenna that allowed subscribers to hook up cord-free. They told me it was pretty fast and was on the order of $25 a month (but you had to buy some hardware from them to get started).

Not sure anything like that is available in your area, but perhaps worth nosing around. It is flat here and perhaps all the "hills and hollers" in BT might preclude such a service.

Really, the quality and reliability of cable is hard to beat. And the internet phone option can be a real boon too.

Steve

With two computers on the cable modem and wired router and dont think there is a noticeable change in speed. We still have a small local phone company that bundles the Telephone, TV package and cable modem (brightlightning) service for around $95 a month. Standard phone service here is only around $22 of that bundle so I think the cable modem was $35 a month.

After changing from dial up to cable modem I could never go back. Loading pictures/videos or watching Youtube alone would be hard to give up. :hide:

ATT high speed has only become available here, recently.

But I am trying to get away from ATT all together not invite more

of it in. They can take a $13.00 phone bill and turn it into a $40

phone bill with state, federal, taxes, access charges, line connectivity

fees, and anything more the local, state and federal government can

gouge us for. I would hate to see what access fees/taxes would be tacked

on to more ATT services!

Yes I know ATT is not the only culprit here.....the government is getting

too big a slice of that pie.

I pay only $20 a month for cell phone service and there are no taxes and

access fees. I say the landlines can do just the same.

Mike, Our phone is only around $22, in that are all those fees you mentioned but we also have a $5 Mileage outside base Rate fee. They charge $1 per mile extra for our small town over the larger town 5 miles away.

On cable modem speed I ran a test several times and got an average of 1560 Kbps with a high of 2100 and low of 1200 Kbps. Not sure how that lines up with other systems but the test is at Cnet. http://reviews.cnet.com/internet-speed-test/

I have Comcast as well. I have 6 computers Networked here. (Business purposes)

Except for issues related to my older style router I love the speed! I pay only $35 a month. Below are the speeds I'm getting.

:hide: :D mike i have that package deal from AT&T and it sucks, like someone said in the earlier post, they have things added to my bill that i don't know anything about. i have my 3 mobiles phones, house line, DISH TV, and internet runs around 218.00 per month.

t-mo never heard of those networks, looked thru our local providers and hughes net , dish, and direct tv is about the only providers, so am stuck with dial up or a satalite :hide::omg: can get all kinds of dial ups,,,

T-Mo, I am running 3 computers plus an internet telephone using charter and still getting almost 5mb download speeds. I think the big difference is the size of the cable carrying the signal. Compare the size of the conductor in the cable wire to that in a phone wire and you will see what I mean. Also if the phone wiring in your house is old, your speed will be affected.
