82Caddy 851 #1 Posted November 3, 2016 Saw this tractor on craigslist and I have no idea what this ignition type is or how to trouble shoot it. Seller says it has no spark. I'm mostly after information
pfrederi 18,700 #2 Posted November 3, 2016 (edited) It is a breakerless ignition. There is a solid state trigger under the shroud that sits next to eh flywheel a bump on the flywheel triggers a magnet inside it. This is like a mag in that it doesn't need battery power to run and like a mag if you apply voltage to the wire that goes from the ignition switch to the coil you will fry the system!!! Trigger and coil (the triangular thing with two wires on the bottom plug wire on top) are NLA. One wire on the bottom of the coil goes the trigger the other is the kill wire grounded by the ignition switch. There are diagnostics in the manual. You can retrofit a battery with points ignition if the breakerless tests out bad. Edited November 3, 2016 by pfrederi
82Caddy 851 #3 Posted November 3, 2016 Can this be switched to a points breaker style ignition easily or is it better to repair what is there?
pfrederi 18,700 #4 Posted November 3, 2016 Used triggers and coils some times show up on ebay but they are pricey. real pricey. As i said you can convert...and looking at first picture the current owner may have thought about it as I think I see a regular coil lying near the starter. You will need points, point cover and pluger, coil and a new ignition switch. The block was drilled and taped for points
formariz 12,045 #5 Posted November 4, 2016 From past experience the first place I would look at, are the connections at the rectifier which should be located in the back of the dash( not easy to get to but easy to see). If it looks like connectors got loose and shorted there, the stator is fried. Although pricey you can find coil and trigger relatively easy. The stator however is a different story. Very hard to find and extremely expensive.

It took a bit of work, but nothing a good mechanically inclined person couldn't do.
