The bin was 3/4th empty, It was tall enough that if he fell, the fall alone even into "soft" grain would be enough. This makes two farmers three miles apart on the same road, separated by fifteen years. Gary was liked by everyone and farmed my little bit of heaven. This year the yield is the best I have ever seen as all the soybeans are three to a pod I saw the fire rescue truck go by and stop at his house and got there just as his wife was just out of control with grief. Horrible to see. I work alone quite a bit as well, and it makes you stop and think as we get older and less sure footed we need someone around . Gary was 75 and still was very active. The rescue/recovery team actually finished emptying that bin for him so they could take him out the bottom of the bin. It took three hours.... Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Upper Canada 213 #13 Posted October 6, 2016 Sorry about your loss. I know how it feels. I lost my neighbour a few years ago in a tractor mishap. He was a very nice guy who would do anything for you and expect nothing in return. I was always envious of his big JD tractor until he had his accident and then you realize that they are not toys. I am happy with my Wheel Horses which are much much smaller but I still use them with caution as they can inflict a lot of damage on a human if misused. ohiofarmer 3,372 #18 Posted October 8, 2016 My wife and I attended the viewing that was to be from 4 to 8 and we got there before 5. It took TWO HOURS to go through the line. The line wrapped completely around the church and nearly touched in a circle. You had to see it to believe it. There was some issue with the funeral home in town not being available tonight. It was a blessing in disguise as there was no way the town had enough parking unless they would have used the school lot and shuttled people, We had a large pasture field and used that at our country church. When we left, the line was even longer than when we got there. I have no idea how our little church will hold the crowd for the funeral tomorrow.. We are partnering with another church for enough space for the family dinner. Some of the neighbors washed up some of Gary's nicest farm equipment and set it by the road. [I am guessing] that it will be so he can ride past it on his trip to the cemetery.
