Recommended Posts

Hey I finally got it...this is a great! :hide: Wild Bill has a nice article on the unidrive transmission...Lots of great information. I was always scared to crack one of these things open, but with this information and pictures it doesnt seem extremely difficult.!! :D:hide:

Great Work Wild Bill :horseplay:

P.S Bill why did you choose the 754...was there something wrong with the tranny or did you just pick this one out of the pile? You said a gear was in backwards...seems I remember this tranny working okay when I went with dad to pick it up,,,But then again I dont think we drove it, due to it was not running when I was with him on the trip. :omg:

Keep up the good work!

Michael,

Thanks for the compiments! :hide:

The Uni-Drive in the 754 would slip out of third gear and the tractor is slated for restoration this winter so doing a rebuild article on the 754's transmission seemed logical. :hide: When the case was split it was found that in some time in the past the supporting bearing for the brake shaft gear .... wore slam out and the reverse idler gear was installed with the chamfer pointing towards the case ... not the counter shaft gears like it is supposed to. :D I used the 754 this way for a while and even had it at the 2006 Constantine show in Michigan. When this Uni-Drive was rebuilt before a new brake shaft gear was installed but installed the reverse idler gear backwards ...... NOW WHEN YOU READ THE NEXT ARTICLE on the rebuild you will notice I use the term "BENCH CHECKING" a lot , if the rebuilder tested the transmission before installing in the 754 they would have noticed the gears were not turning properly. Keep in mind that if there is a UNDETECTED problem in a transmission and the trasnmission gets installed the power of the engine might over power the problem and just grind things up before you would know it.

DAFFYNITION : :omg: Bench Checking, testing a componate on a bench to make sure it works properly BEFORE INSTALLING IT .... cause ya' know dang well it will mess up if installed first with out testin' and will have to come back out!!! :omg:

On page 5, in Brandon's letter, he mentions that Kate will be at the 2009 show in Wauseon, Ohio.

Any body know anything about this show?

Dates? etc. ?

Mike......

Actually it is a John Deere site - or at least it used to be. Admittedly I haven't visit the site in some time. Brandon started the magazine in 2002, the first issue was the January/February 2002 issue. I subscribed for the first couple of years. When I was subscribing it was ALL John Deere in the magazine. It was called the "LGT NEWS". I have all the issues from that first couple of years. Here's the cover of the very first issue:

Noticed under the magazine's title "A Newsletter for John Deere lawn & garden collectors". I'm not sure when Brandon changed the format from all JD to all brands. Also the first year the magazine was 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches (a letter size paper folded in half) and the first issue had 20 pages. The second year the format was a complete letter size, i.e. 8.5 x 11 inches.

Sent the subsciption check out two weeks ago. I'm looking forward to seeing what the magazine is all about. Sounds like it's a good one.
