That SK-486 is a great horse.  I think we have a manual for it in the Manual section if you do not have one.  Welcome to Red square :)  I especially like the suction attachment that allows the horse to stick on a wall.  That is a great storage option.  :handgestures-thumbupright:  :banana-linedance::banana-linedance::banana-linedance:

They were made in 1982 along with the SB421 which had a Briggs motor. They were probably using up leftover hoods and fenders. :)

So is the SK486 the last of the C160 8-speeds? That's what it looks like to me. If not, what is the difference?

One of the main differences between the C-160 and SK-486 is the transmission.  The SK-486 has a 1" rear axle with 4 pinions.  The C-160's have a 1 1/8" axle with 8 pinions.  That said, I've noticed no difference in the performance between the smaller and larger axle models.  I have a SK-486, it's a great machine.  Congratulations on your find!

AL c could you get a couple pics under your foot boards, mine looks like it had bolts in the outer holes but there's nothing there to bolt to. I think I'm missing some pieces to hold the floor boards tight.

Look at the 3rd Sheet Metal and Covers page of the TIPL

The Frame page shows the round bars the footrest bolts to.

Dan,

There are two "clasps" bolted to the underside of the outside of each foot board.  The clasps fit around the two rods that extend from the frame.  See pics.  Good luck!

@Al C.  I just noticed that your motor is mounted on a plate. With the things that Wheel Horse did over the years I'm wondering if they were using up some motors intended for the short lived shaker mounts.

Not sure.  It's a Kohler 16hp K341.

It is something that just hit me. Normally the 10-16 hp k-series are bolted directly to the frame. A couple years earlier when they used the shaker mount it required a different oil pan to fit. It also reduced the oil capacity from 2 quarts to 1 1/2 quarts (if my memory is serving me properly). I can't tell for sure if Dans motor is mounted the same way. :)

I wouldn't be surprised.  Everything I've read, the SK-486's were the mongrels of the family.

I don't know if that's the right word Al. Some of the coolest models were made when they used up parts. You can bet the SK-486 will be on my list once we get back to Indiana and I have more room. :)
