1996 312-8 garden tractor, something wrong with clutch

Hi everyone,

There is something wrong with my clutch. I was cutting the steep bank in my yard in low range, up the bank and I would push the clutch in to drift back and then repeat back up and then drift back down while the tranny was still in forward gear. I don't know by doing this is what caused the problem because I had just bought the tractor.  The problem is, sometimes when I depress the clutch firmly down all the way, when stopped, to go to another gear, I'll start to let out the clutch and the belt starts to squeal like something is locked up. I'll play around with the gear box, put it into neutral, push the clutch pedal some and then put it into gear then it will be alright. does anybody understand what this problem could be? Thanks a million for any help.

Probably just the belt squealing

It could also be the bearing in the idler pulley.

:WRS:     I think a new belt would be in order. This manual may be helpful.

Lane Huls Just a personal observation. I think you need to finish the garage before you get to many tractors and you will have to make room some where else. Nice line up. Nice Bronco by the way. Hard to find these.

I had a similar problem.  Sometimes the transmission would lock-up.  Found a broken bolt in the transmission.  The bolt would sometimes wedge between a gear and the case.

That model came with a gas-spring as Toro call it. To keep the clutch from engaging too quickly. That could cause the belt squeal as you are using it to stop the tractor before going forward.

Yes It is locking up, the guy I bought it from welded the shifting leaver on because it had broken off. Maybe some weld fell down in. Thanks for your input.

Thank you for your help but the tractor wont even free wheel unless I put it into neutral.
