T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #1 Posted July 31, 2016 My K-91 is getting a weak spark. It doesn't have a condenser on it, should it? I will be trouble shooting more to check the point gap to see if it's .020 as the manual calls for. According to the manual it should have a Champion RJ8C plug, but that's too small of a thread. My K-91 has a champion D21 plug on it. So, should there be a condenser on this thing?
Racinbob 11,030 #2 Posted July 31, 2016 The condenser is under the flywheel.
ol550 830 #3 Posted July 31, 2016 Sounds like the the original spark plug threads stripped.
squonk 40,999 #4 Posted July 31, 2016 Weak magnets or point gap wrong effecting the coil build up time or the spark timing itself.
wallfish 16,963 #5 Posted July 31, 2016 Yes, there should be a condenser. Pull the flywheel and post a pic.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #6 Posted August 2, 2016 Point gap checks out okay, so it's time to pulled the flywheel.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #7 Posted August 13, 2016 I want to replace the magneto and condensor. Can you point me in the direction for part numbers, where to buy, etc? Parts Tree has part number 220435-S, but it's quite pricey and I want to be sure it's what I really need. Thanks.w
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,022 #8 Posted August 14, 2016 Found this coil at a Stens dealer in Canada. https://www.bantasaw.com/catalog/viewproduct.asp?i=&p=1386 Stens 460-071 also listed to replace Phelon FG02145 Found a Napa 7-01628 coil and 7-01336 condenser for mag ignition. T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #9 Posted August 14, 2016 Thanks, Garry. On the Napa 7-01628, I found this youtube video. It looks like that one may need some modifications to work.
Racinbob 11,030 #10 Posted August 14, 2016 I'm dealing with the same issue. I found this one. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/PRI0/701628/N0790.oap?ck=Search_N0790_-1_-1&pt=N0790&ppt=C0218 It probably would have to be modified too.
Racinbob 11,030 #11 Posted August 14, 2016 Found them on Ebay too. Under $27 shipped. I just ordered one to try out.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #12 Posted August 15, 2016 More troubleshooting. I read in the Kohler service manual that to test the flywheel magnets, you can hold a screw driver blade about an inch from the magnet and if they magnet is good, it will quickly draw the blade to it. One of the magnets on my flywheel will draw the screw driver blade around half an inch or so, maybe more. But the other one it's more like under a quarter of an inch. That one looks like it's got some wear on it as it's tapered a bit on one side. Looking in Parts Tree to see if these can be bought, they're not shown in the flywheel or the ignition section that I can see. If these can be bought, does anyone have one that they're willing to sell? I can post a wanted to buy ad if necessary. I have the coil and condensor on order from ebay. wallfish 16,963 #13 Posted August 15, 2016 Think I have one. I'll go out and check the magnets first and report back.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #14 Posted August 15, 2016 That would be cool.
wallfish 16,963 #15 Posted August 15, 2016 (edited) I got one, edited my post but somehow it didn't stick. Seems much easier and cheaper to send just the magnets instead of the whole flywheel. It's only held on with 3 screws so make sure yours can be removed without any broken screws. Send me a PM with your address and I'll ship it first so you can test it out. If that's not your problem you can just send it back. Edited August 15, 2016 by wallfish
Dan Hankins 80 #16 Posted August 22, 2016 You can check your coil with a meter set to 20k ohms put one lead in the plug wire end touch the other to any of your pickups should read 5 to 8k ohms most will read about 6 and a halfish if good once up to 8 it's getting weak. T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #17 Posted August 30, 2016 It has spark! New coil, new condensor, and an "used" set of magnets and it is firing now.
