953 trans help!

Recommended Posts

I just compared parts list for the 5045 (953), 5047 (1054) and 5025. It appears to me that the gear ratio was changed with the input pulley. So a transmission swap may be an option. I think the axles may be an issue though. I believe the 953 has longer axles. This is only speculation because I don't have a 5045 or 5047 to play with and just looking at the drawings can be misleading but it appears that the splined end of the axles are the same as other 1.125" axles. This is telling me that maybe an axle swap with another transmission with 1.125" axles. I also can't help but feel that a differential swap could be possible with some creative thinking. Again, this is only speculation and just throwing thoughts out there. With the interchangeability of Wheel Horse parts over the years it just screams to think outside of the box.

Something else. I think I remember somebody saying the bolt pattern at the frame was different on a 953. Probably not a big issue but.......:confusion-shrug:

Thinking along the same lines Bob.  Maybe a different differential would work by changing out the 11/44 toothed gear also.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

@dells68 let us know when you get the trans apart...I have a 5025 apart now and we can take some measurements.  Whether or not, I would like to see what is possible here.  It's a great opportunity for the site.  :)

That's the gear in question Steve. I'm thinking it will swap out if needed as well as the original axles fitting into the new differential. Why do we get excited about this stuff?

Thanks for the help guys.  The trans was apart when I got it.  It's the dif that I need to pull apart.  I would like to keep the original trans if I can, but don't mind some creative parts swapping if needed.  I'll swap out transmissions if I have to as a last resort.

An 8 pinion differential would be more readily available. If out thoughts are correct you might be able to fit one in your transmission. Sometimes these things work out great and offer a alternative solution as these old parts get harder and harder to fine. Much like when I fitted splined axles and gears to a 5003/5010 transmission differential. That is why Steve mentioned that this could be a great opportunity. :)

Steve, I'll try to open it tonight and get some measurements and more pics.  At dr with Dad now - knee has started draining and turning pretty red.  When it rains it pours!

Our prayers for your Dad's healing, he is priority #1 now, the trans will still be there.

Take care of business first.  Prayers with you and yours.  When you come back in here, we figured out a few things, but it just leads to more questions.  When you are ready.  :)
