Wheel-N-It 2,976 #1 Posted July 10, 2016 Trying to post my first video. I've replaced and adjusted the slack in the shifter . Installed a new shifter boot. Cleaned the fuel system replaced a hub and axle seal. Bought a drive belt cover and AG tires on wheels at the big show. Changed oil. Removed the lift for now. Replaced all the nuts and bolts and washers on the steering column and console. O K, my question is can some tell me the current part number for the drive belt that connects the engine to the transmission? Also can someone tell me the current part number for the two belts that connects the starter/generator to the Kohler engine? I can probably match the old S/G belts to something at NAPA but I don't have a drive belt that's even close to being the correct one. Thank you guys! rmaynard 16,255 #2 Posted July 10, 2016 To the best of my memory, the old drive belt number was 1576, replaced by 9691. The common number for that belt is a 4L700, 1/2" x 70". The S/G belts are commonly known as 4L310, 1/2" x 31"

Or are they a number common to multiple belt suppliers? Edited July 10, 2016 by Wheel-N-It
rmaynard 16,255 #6 Posted July 10, 2016 They are common belt numbers which relate to size. 4L = 1/2", 310 = 31" and 700 = 70". Just take those numbers to any auto parts store and they can cross them over to Gates or any other brand. Just be sure that the drive belt you get is fabric covered. I have had much success with the Huskee blue Kevlar belts from TSC.

Van, go to Napa and get a 4L700W and 2 4L310W belts. Their belts are Gates and they use those numbers. They will be the green Kevlar reinforced belts. You need the W on the end. Wheel-N-It 2,976 #8 Posted July 11, 2016 Thank you so very much Bob and Mike! You two have been a big help. I will be getting those belts this week. I'm looking forward to getting that little tractor moving under its own power.
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #10 Posted July 11, 2016 This is all I can do for now. I'll post some more after I replace all the belts. Then the belt covers will be installed and the tractor will look more finished. I was thinking you might want another pic of the sammich I ate on the way home from Old Red Rider's house yesterday

WHX?? 51,558 #16 Posted July 12, 2016 Good video Van....next time put the sammy down so you can hold the camera right side up!! Saw those ags at the show and almost jumped on them myself. Looks like the too cool twin start/gen belts were jumping around abit, a tension issue here?? Could have been just the the way the vid came out too? or is that why you are going to replace??
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #17 Posted July 12, 2016 Both of the S/G belts are worn out. I ordered all new belts from NAPA yesterday. I'll pick them up this afternoon. All three belts will cost about $25 plus sales tax. NAPA beat Advance Auto's price. I was very fortunate to find those 8.50 AGs at the show. Even better is they only have air in them, no fluid. No need for the extra weight. It's not a working tractor, just something to ride around at the Big Show.
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #18 Posted July 13, 2016 Another baby step of progress was made yesterday. I picked up the belts at NAPA but could not do any wrenching last night due to having to be at a dinner meeting. I probably will have to work today till around 7pm so I'm not sure about working on the 701 after I get home. But here is a pic of the belts with the part numbers for the records. I am very grateful to those who chimed in with advice on what belts to buy.
squonk 43,543 #19 Posted July 13, 2016 If I had a dollar for every one of those belts I sold, I could fill your van with Rhubarb pies!
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #20 Posted July 13, 2016 I'd love to have my old van packed full of rhubarb pies. I'd eat those things till I popped!
Lane Ranger 11,368 #21 Posted July 13, 2016 (edited) Wheel-N-It : You are going to love that 701 the more you get to use it -no doubt about it. I use my 701 with the hydraulic pump in my vegetable garden each year and it is a great working tractor for all we need to do. sheared a pin or bolt on my rockshaft the other day and had to reinstall a pin so I used a hitch pin. I ran my starter generator on one belt for about a year and finally bought two new NAPA belts like you bought when my old one gave way . posted a video of the hydraulic pump lifting the block on the nine shovel cultivator I use in the garden between the rows. 015.MOV Video of the hydraulic lift working. 015.MOV Edited July 13, 2016 by Lane Ranger
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #22 Posted July 13, 2016 (edited) Lane, thats a nice 701 you have. Jay was telling me at the Big Show about how you tend to a garden every year with your 701. That says alot about how tough these little tractors still are after all these years. I actually knew very little about the roundhoods even after being a Supporter here and attending the Big Show. I did not even know the 701 was the first little Wheel Horse tractor with the engine in the front. About a year ago I saw this one for sale on CL in the next town over. Turns out the guy who owned it was a Cub Cadet collector who somehow acquired a Wheel Horse. I understand that as I'm a Wheel Horse collector whom somehow acquired a Cub Cadet. Anyway long story short, the 701 came home with me that day, and I'm actually growing quite fond of it. I read your posting about using the hitch pin, and wondering if it is a good idea. I think that was a good idea as installing the hitch pin was probably a lot easier and faster than another nut and bolt. Wheel-N-It 2,976 #24 Posted July 14, 2016 Lane you got a big green thumb to go along with that little red tractor. That's a beautiful garden! Well done friend That's definitely a garden to be proud of!
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #25 Posted July 15, 2016 It's running and driving! Here is a little video of my Son In Law driving the 701 for his first time. He is a Wheel Horse guy too. He has a 312-8 Kohler Magnum powered. You will notice two things. One is the S/G belt guard is not installed. I do have a nice one but am holding off until I get a new battery. Second the drive belt guard us from a 753. I like how sturdy the tab is where the guard bolts to the engine, plus it has the extra little belt follower that the 701 belt guard does not have. I do have a 701 guard in case I ever sell the tractor. VID_20160714_194355660.mp4
