JamesC-120 204 #1 Posted June 10, 2016 I have a decent wheel horse 953. It has a well used 10hp Kohler that uses oil and vibrates pretty bad. I picked up a 10 hp Chinese diesel on Craigslist and was considering swapping it in, I put some hours on the engine and it seems fine. I just don't really want to ruin a decent 953. From what I understand they are pretty rare but I just wanted your opinion on if I should do it? I might have to cut the hood a little or modify my air intake. The tractor is definitely not the nicest one out there. Let me know what you guy think? Thanks
Pullstart 66,594 #2 Posted June 10, 2016 It's your ride, do what you'd like with it! I bet you won't regret the powerplant swap, and if you're worried about it just build a different intake vs chopping the hood. If you ever come across another 10 horse or get the time to rebuild your original you can always keep it under the bench to swap back... But if you have the new diesel, sounds like your mind is mostly made up!

Ken B 3,189 #4 Posted June 10, 2016 The best advice I can give is don't make any mods that can't be easily reversed and of course no hacking. (not that you would..) I think a 953 would be a real cool tractor with a diesel in it. Almost like it should have had one from the get go.

Russ @SALTYWRIGHT has a 1054 with a diesel powering it, do a search on here to see how he worked it out. As others have said, build a new air intake rather than cutting up your .
JamesC-120 204 #6 Posted June 10, 2016 I'm liking your replies. I think I will do it. It's probably going to be a while before this gets done because I want to also put an 8 pinion differential in it so I don't destroy the original. I think I might paint this tractor while I've got the engine and trans out as well. And I'm in the middle of a k91 rebuild for my RJ. Just dropped it off at the machine shop yesterday. And money is not exactly plentiful right now with all my other projects.

SylvanLakeWH 28,311 #11 Posted June 11, 2016 I will be watching this thread as I am thinking diesel down the road as well... Hey Saltywright - just curious - how Is that winch mounted? I've got a small one and I'm struggling with a mount that won't get in the way of the front mule drive on my c-105...
SALTYWRIGHT 861 #12 Posted June 11, 2016 CRAIG THANKS FOR POSTING THE PITURES. THE 1054 HOOD DOES NOT OPEN LIKE YOUR C-81. I MADE THE MOUNT FOR THE WINCH. RUSS
