I have a test switch that I need help with. It has three black wires and I think one goes to the red from the battery, one going to a grey wire that goes to the pcb board. Can someone tell me where the third wire goes. It is a 31-12K804.

Take a look in the manuals section for the specific electrical diagram for your tractor.  There are several different models of the 312 depending on when it was made.  (serial number/model are under the seat).  If not readable, which engine do you have?  Magnum, or K type?  They have different electrics, but for this part should not matter.  Ignition and other parts are different.

1992 312-8 operator manual has a wiring diagram

No black wire at the test switch.

Usually black is for ground wires so see if you can follow it to the other end. First check for voltage in the black wire and if there is none it is safe to connect an ohmmeter and see if it has continuity with the chassis metal.

So the switch has three wires. I said they all looked black , I could be wrong. One of the wires was not connected and I see no signs where it might have gone. I do have one going to the red and one to the grey in the switch.

Can anyone help with the wiring of the switch. All drawings do not show how to wire the three wire switch.
