Tecumseh engine...

551's my best guess.

Hood stand/battery box don't look right though.  :confusion-shrug:

Close AC dude... 1961 401 Sub...Highly modified hood is anyway. I don't think that engine is orginal AMC, Seat pan looks like it might have been on a 59 RJ or early 400

I'm going with a 60 Suburban. The engine isn't original which is why the hood was cut up. Obviously we can't tell by the throttle/choke controls but the footrest is a 1960. :)

I was looking at the front of the dash Bob ... the two holes? I would think '60 some of the throttle/choke cut out would still be there?? Hood didn't get Racinbobbed ...:laughing-rolling: .. tht much

Sorry Jim. I'm with Bob on this one... tractor has 1960 foot rests.... makes it more likely to be 1960. A PO probably used the top squared off edge of the throttle cutout to start the cutting off of the hood.

Easy to have two holes in the hood... my 400 has two.. one original, one not.

Good point Jim. Ya made me run out to the garage and measure. 2 3/4" from the top of the cutout to where it starts sloping up. It's hard to tell in the picture. I'm thinking like Jason on that being the starting point for the hack. I've got the hole on the right. :)

I agree with the foot rests .... are we saying the two holes I have circled arn't orginal then?

very close inspection reveals the top screw hole where the choke/throttle was bolted on 1960. The cutout was just below that.

only the right hole is original.  Left one was drilled or punched later, it's also smaller.

Here's mine with the original plug in the right side. Don't have any showing the hardware toggle on/off switch the PO put on the other side.

From what I've seen it's just about a 50/50 mix on that hole. Later on in the 60's they probably only made them with the hole for replacements so they could go o either year. As far as the seat, I tend to believe the original parts list and it shows the 2510 seat with holes but I would say there's no doubt that they came out of the factory both with and without. :)

I just now noticed something in the 60 Suburban owners manual. Item # 4 under "All Aboard" Starting my engine:

Pull retractable starter cord on engine. Or push starter button (optional equipment).

Interesting.

I told the owner to register to the forum so he can read all your knowledgeable posts.

Thanks for all the responses. I am sure it will enable him to save another round hood.

1960 400/550.

The hood is 1960 and the clutch pedal is 1960, plus the added support of the 1960 foot rests and the solid seat pan.

Which one of the little boogers you been talking to?  They all know I "ain't right."  Gotta make learning fun - Lord knows the gov't has tried to suck all of that out!  Green and yellow you say?  I always thought if it's not red, you leave it in the shed and I've not seen any green in my shed.  :banana-dreads:. Today was actually our kids last day and I hated to see them leave!  Sorry -:text-offtopic:
