Sparky-(Admin) 23,247 #1 Posted May 6, 2016 I'm sure like me, many of you have oil bottles with just a bit left that you can't toss out. So is there any harm in mixing differant brands or weights of oil? Mike....
ACman 7,655 #2 Posted May 7, 2016 I wouldn't be afraid of mixing those together. If you have something that burns a little oil that's what I would use it for .Someone makes a rack that you put your jugs on upside down to let them empty fully into another jug so you use every bit of oil.
dcrage 630 #3 Posted May 7, 2016 I wouldn't think twice about it
Sparky-(Admin) 23,247 #4 Posted May 7, 2016 Ok...good...that's two in favor of mixing. I say that because I already mixed it all for an oil change in my 310-8 (Magnum). After draining the oil I discovered that all my straight 30w was gone, so those bottles in my pic all went in the 310. Mike.....
elcamino/wheelhorse 9,362 #5 Posted May 7, 2016 I always drain my oil containers into a bigger container. I don't mix weights. Always use straight 30 wt in the and 10 w 30 in the El Camino.
953 nut 60,235 #6 Posted May 7, 2016 Considering the advancements in lubricant technology that have taken place over the half century since my s were built, I am sure the mixture will be superior to what they had coming out of the factory.

Terry M-(Moderator) 2,239 #8 Posted May 7, 2016 I would tend to agree too Sometimes though, I'll collect the tiny amounts of unused oil in a single bottle and use it as chain oil in my chain saw....call me weird. just my 2 cents.... Terry
rmaynard 16,343 #9 Posted May 7, 2016 Considering that my dad used to drain the oil out of his car every 3000 miles and save it for the lawn mowers, I don't think you'll have a problem.
Phatboy 565 #10 Posted May 8, 2016 Here is the problem with using mixed oils in a engine or high speed or rotating mechanical device or equitment,, if you habe a oil that at 70 degrees is 30w and another at that temp is 35 or 40W,, the oils "will" seperate,,, because of the different additives that different companies use, different oils react differently at different ambient temperatures .. So that being said using in engine or hydro pump is a bad idea,, i once had to take a class on this very subject for work,,, now if you are using in a chainsaw blade or something of that nature sure no problem,, bit to use it in the ways mentioned above will lead to a much shorter equitment life,,, remember these are not the "Basic oils of old,, in todays oils they all have additives,, and from company to company different ones at that... hope my insight helps you out buddy !!! Racinbob 11,977 #12 Posted May 8, 2016 Most of me agrees with the majority here, no problem at all. But............I couldn't bring myself to do it. OK, maybe in a push mower. I hate those things.
Phatboy 565 #13 Posted May 9, 2016 (edited) If motor oil is just motor oil,, then why the different weights ? Why use 10W-30 instead of straight 40 or 10 or 20 ? Why because it acts different in different temperatures ,,, its not rocket science its just science,,, and how is it made into multi- grade oil ?? Additives ! And is diesel motor oil able to withstand higher temps ? yes and why? Additives !!! different oils do different things in different situations,,, temps etc...Hence the reason for different oils in the first place, For those who honestly believe "Oil is just Oil " good luck lol !!!
