P220 Oil seeping.

Recommended Posts

Let me start by saying sorry there is no photo.

I have a small (if there is such a thing) oil leak on my 220. It is on the right hand side of the engine, just above the bearing plate. There is a circular disc about 1 1/2 in diameter that is weeping oil. If it were automotive, I would call it a freeze plug. The parts breakdown simply says "Plug" Anyway, it looks like the PO may have applied some sealer at one point (Reddish brown RVT???). I thought that was a crappy fix and then I was looking at rebuilt short-blocks and it looks like they come that way (with sealer, not with leaks)

Anyone care to tell me what this part actually is and what it does AND if there is in fact a sealer that is the proper fix.

Its only a small amount of oil, but I hate things that leak oil (no more old British cars for me) and worse yet, when the oil hits the airflow, it puts a fine coating on the cylinder head, which makes chaff start to collect more easily, and from what I have read, that's a no-no.

So is this something I should worry about or just put my big-boy pants on and stop whining?

That plug is at the end of the camshaft.  It is a reasonably common oil leak on Onans.

Sorry I cant tell you how to fix it, the only one I have ever replaced was while the engine was apart.  You probably could pull the old one out by screwing a self tapping screw into the middle and pulling it out.

I am sure that there are others on here who have done it.

That is the welch plug covering the end of the camshaft.

I had a bad leak on the 520HC there. The plug was loose.

I lifted it out with a magnet, cleaned the area real well, applied a small bead of sealer to the ridge where the plug sits and installed a new plug.

A hit in the center with a large punch and hammer and the new plug is nice and tight.

Wait a little while for the sealant to cure then start the engine and no leaks.

You can buy a pair of pliers that are designed to take out freeze out plugs in cars and take out the welch plug ,,, when you squeze them the ends go out instead of in,,and they have teeth on the ouside of them,, and are only a cpl of bucks,,, dont put a srew in there if you get a piece of metal in the engine you will regret not spendinng a cpl of bucks on the proper tool,,, easy fix in 5 minites or less..

Those plugs are cupped and just slightly smaller than the hole they are sized to fit. The idea is to flatten the cup a bit which makes the OD of the plug larger. We always held a ball peen hammer on the plug and hit the 1st hammer with a second hammer to flatten the plug. The large hammer head centered on the plug seems to be more effective. This way you can't miss and damage the block/hole. The best solution is a new plug with a thin strip of sealer on the edge.

What are they called, or have a link?    I just did a quick search but just keep coming up with tools to install them.

Mine is leaking too and I'm thinking of replacing it too.

Thanks all,

So this area is not under pressure? That is to say that it simply contains oil being "splashed" to lubricate the cam-shaft?

Thanks again.

Not that end of the cam. I believe the gear end of the camshaft may be supplied oil.

Now that we are finding more uses for the 1990 520H with a KwikWay loader I am experiencing some power loss in the hydro after about a half hour to 45 minutes??????

Selling my trusty WH520H.  ~880 hours (currently used for moving snow when needed so hours may rise) very solid machine, strong and hardworking.  20HP Onan, hydro transmission and hydraulic lift.  Has Matt's foot-pedal conversion for forward/reverse.  Included in the sale is a tall-chute snow blower and 60" mowing deck.  The blower is in excellent condition and is on the tractor currently.  The mowing deck has been a workhorse over the years.  No holes but could use some TLC, probably needs new spindles at some point and could use a couple spots touched up with welder also does NOT have any pulley covers/protectors (see photo).  Tractor has been an incredible tool, very solid and dependable and I'm certainly going to miss her when she's gone.

Recent maintenance: replaced the plugs this summer, fluids as needed (hydro has about 100 hours on fluid/filter; oil was done in the spring and has about 25 hours on it).  Battery is about 3 years old as are the tires, Terra Trac tires on the rear and turfs on the front.  The seat (with arm rests) isn't in great shape.  I've got a cover for the seat, never used.  It's never really bothered me but new seat cover is included in sale as are 4 hub caps, chains for the rear tires, and some misc spare parts (see photos).

I've owed this machine about 8 year and put ~350 hours on her.  She's not a show piece but could be restored.  Sheet metal is generally in shape, no rust however the hood does have a couple dings in it.

I'm only selling because I'm trying to help my son get a small lawn care business started and looking to move to a zero-turn.  The 60" deck is too large for our trailer, the mowing deck lacks pulley safety shields, and we'd like something that mows faster.  My only complaint with this machine is the top-speed (which isn't great when comparing to today's machines) otherwise she's a beast.  They don't make them like this anymore.

I have a new-to me 1990 520 with a KwikWay loader. Have been going thu piece by piece and checking for anything that needs attention. Found some wobble in the rear hubs (both sides) the key ways on both the axles and hubs shoe some pretty heavy wear.  Was wondering if you have used the hub repair kits that A-Z sells and any comments good or bad?
      Thanks
