gawald 30 #1 Posted April 20, 2016 Back in the early '80's I had a D180 that I loved and had to sell when I moved. Always missed my Wheel Horse so when a C141 appeared on CL, I just had to buy it as I now have 50 acres to play with. Still would like a D series though. I admire the other models of Wheel Horse that I see on the site, especially the old ones, but my personal favorites are the C series and D series. The C series for the looks and the D series for their brawn. I constantly troll CL for a D series but have seen only one for sale and it was priced way too high for its condition. What is your favorite model Wheel Horse? Input please.
Aldon 4,828 #2 Posted April 20, 2016 I have no experience with round hoods although I like the looks of them. I find that most of them are 90% of what my ideal lawn and garden tractor should have. I end up modifying them a bit. I do not like the hoods on the 3-4 & 5 Series tractors personally. in Short, I like Hydros best so far and the GT14 is my favorite. However I would like to get my GT14's to not change speeds arbitrarily. I had thought it was due to the shift mechanism but as I have wrenched on them more and tightened the shift mechanism it still drifts with pressure or something.....
Tankman 3,523 #3 Posted April 20, 2016 Never owned a D-Series. Our favorites, 416-8 Kohler and our 520-8 Onan. The 12 hp Kohlers never complain.
elcamino/wheelhorse 9,362 #4 Posted April 20, 2016 My favorite Tractor is my 1972 Commando 800. Right now it is a roller, but after this summer it just might come back to life as a Commando 812 frankenhorse.

Amcwheel85 2,059 #10 Posted April 20, 2016 Yea I would take them all. Older the better for me. Love my 856 and 857 but also love the round hood style.
rjg854 12,217 #11 Posted April 20, 2016 I've only own 2 models, Commando 8, and a 854. I find myself going for the 854 more often than either of the Commandos. Not sure why cause they are very similar. The 854 just seems more comfortable.
Bert 760 #12 Posted April 20, 2016 (edited) I tried to narrow it down to one but its a draw between my work horse 700 with HH100 repower, or my C165 with 520 front end and rear rims. If it's narrowed down to stock I'd have to say my 857, but I like the others more Edited April 21, 2016 by Bert

JPWH 6,361 #14 Posted April 21, 2016 (edited) Good to see another Georgian here. I am only an hour or two south of you depending what area of Atlanta you are. I only have one that is operational right now. It's a Raider 12 with an 8 HP. I will soon have the 854 ready. The Raider will be getting a rebuild next including a new/old 12 hp motor and will be my heavy worker while the 854 will be for mowing and pulling small trailers and the lawn sweeper. These little 's will suite my needs well. So my favorite will be the one I need at the moment. Edited April 21, 2016 by JPWH

ClassicTractorProfessor 5,371 #17 Posted April 22, 2016 My 1277 was my first so it will always have that special place in my heart...but the little 701 I have been putting back together is slowly catching up...and it's a long way from being a runner lol
Retired Wrencher 5,792 #18 Posted April 22, 2016 In the early days I only thought Kohler and there models. As time went buy I bought a 657 and that was it. I am a Tecky fan now. I am always on the look out for these little [LIGHT] tractors. Ohhh I still like Koehler's but it is the challenge to have a Tecky that runs smooth. I do not like the round hoods because I am tall and they are small. But that I just me. I am Big fan of the 60`s and early 70`s Not fan of the cradle engines = power robbers. Docwheelhorse 2,740 #20 Posted April 22, 2016 (edited) Hello All, my absolute "favorite" would have to be the one that made me fall in love with "all of them" My 1968 Commando 8 that I bought against my fathers will off the side of the road @ 13. Drove it home and after a week of mummbly grumbly my old man said.... "hmmmph.... pretty good looking piece of iron!" Its my avatar here on the square.... It sits in my garage under a blanket after being signed by Cecil at the last show he was at. Wish he was still around with Betty.... Overall I would have to say that my growing fleet of 953's & 1054's would be running a close second. Tony Edited April 22, 2016 by Docwheelhorse
doc724 925 #21 Posted April 22, 2016 My favorite is my C141-I like the looks and because it is so simple.
953 nut 60,106 #22 Posted April 22, 2016 Like @Professor1990 said, my 1055 was my first and will always have a place in my herd, but the 953s are my favorite, though I do like the GT-14 and the RJs are real nice and don't forget how well the 312-8 has served my needs! I just can't decide, I just love the RED ones.

Pullstart 66,878 #24 Posted April 22, 2016 I have 2 runners and a parts C-101 and they are my only ones I've had. The 502 was my first and has transformed into a 8 hp / 8 speed (out of the parts C-101) and it's my favorite. Now that the C-101 is an amazing worker for my house, the 502 will eventually see a workbench in fine detail. The hood is cracking at the seam, the steering is loose all over, the transmission needs seals and the brake bearing then it all needs a refresh paintjob. I doubt it'll ever be restored to pristine but a good lookin' worker!
cschannuth 3,817 #25 Posted April 23, 2016 (edited) I've owned a 416-8 and a 520H but my late dad's '78 C-161 is my favorite. He babied that thing it's whole life and it's a blast. It's my work horse. I use it for everything but mowing. Edited April 23, 2016 by cschannuth Wanted to follow thread
