RJ35 Bearing

Recommended Posts

formariz

I am having difficulty locating bearing #1502 for my 1956RJ. Specifically the issue is the one on the pulley side of the cross shaft  which should be sealed on the outside and open on the inside.

They are essentially R12 bearings but I cannot find one that is only 5/16" wide and sealed. All sealed ones are7/16" thick, therefor standing out from housing and pushing out pulley not allowing retaining clip to engage is shaft groove. Any help greatly appreciated as always

Hi Cas.  :)  That #1502 bearing actually measures 3/8" depth...3/4'  x  1 5/8"  x  3/8".  It is what is called a closed bearing.  The vendor name and bearing is NICE 412-35.  They are available from Kelly Supply...KSODIRECT. com.  but I think you have to buy in lots of 10??  Jake Kuhn is selling these I think...send him a PM.  I happen to have a few good used ones if you want.  :)

It seems my link to Kelly supply does not exist any more.  Send a PM to Jake Kuhn and see where he gets them.  I did not have any luck with McMaster-Carr Brian.

The one I got from Mc Master Carr is 7/16 thick and creates the above condition. I see them also advertised elsewhere as 5/16" but when you check the specs on them they are 7/16". It has to be 5/16" and not protrude from housing for pulley to work. I been going nuts looking everywhere.

slide the chain gear farther on the shaft or cut the side facing the bearing

The gear is welded on to the shaft. I could cut the pulley shaft a bit but i will lose the set screw hole. Could re drill it but I will have to assemble the rest of it to see what cutting it will do to belt alignment.

The bearing that was on there is a  5/16" open bearing but it had a clever cap over it which I unfortunately lost.IMG_0141.JPGIMG_0140.JPGIMG_0142.JPGIMG_0143.JPGIMG_0144.JPG

I actually inherited a metal  lathe a few years back and never used it yet. This will be a first for me. This is pretty much how to set it up for this right?IMG_0145.JPG

you can do it that way but it would be better to slide the shaft thru the chuck so the gear is at the chuck face

IMG_0146.JPGYes thought about that but this size shaft will not fit through in this little lathe. This may be the beginning of many new possibilities.

WHX??

Brian is correct in that the workpiece should be kept close to the headstock if possible for better accuracy. Keep lubrication on the work piece support when using it. Use a live end if you have one.

Using the live IMG_0147.JPGend however seems to interfere with cutter

So you just don't want a couple of good used ones??  Or maybe some new ones from Jake Kuhn??  I have some parts you could turn me out if you want to play with that lathe.  :)

Thank you Steve. I am not saying no, and I may need to get them from you. However I am going to attempt this since I been wanting to use the lathe for so long. In addition to that desire I am also thinking about being efficient with my time. You see, the lathe and the still are in the same room, and I always have to kill a substantial amount of time until the stuff starts flowing. Now, I not only have a reason to try my hand at being a machinist but at the same time I can work on my chemistry stuff or and the reverse order. Its a win win situation one may say.

Definitely . I am going first to clean lathe from all the wood dust ( I am a woodworker and its in the shop) lubricate everything and set it up. I will post as I go. I been looking at this lathe for a while thinking about using it but not really having a reason for it. I may then eventually move it to the "tractor shop " since oily stuff and metal shavings are not good companions to wood.

I've just been a member here a month or so, but from reading and watching his videos I've already determined it to be possible that Stevasaurus's middle name is "Bearing".

I think Jim described it accurately as a "desktop" version. It will only let 1/2" through. I have a lot of stuff for it that I am not sure of their function. Which cutter in last picture would be better for this operation?
