MaineDad 87 #1 Posted December 13, 2008 Not sure if you heard, but Maine and New Hampshire got hammered with an ice storm last night. We received 3 inches of snow then over an inch of ice with several inches of rain after. Trees are down all over the place and over a 250,000 homes in Maine are without power. Just got our power back. I spent about 5 hours plowing my driveway and my neighbors. I don't care what size snowblower you have, you cannot touch this stuff with a blower. I was literally pushing waves of water with snow and slush with the plow. It's supposed to get in the low teens tonight so everything on the ground is going to freeze solid. I hate this ice crap. Give me 3 feet of snow anytime!
JimD 3,347 #2 Posted December 13, 2008 glad your power is back on. i agree about the snow rather than ice, can't plow ice. hope it warms up and dries you out before the next one comes in. stay safe and warm up there!
jerrell 1 #3 Posted December 13, 2008 Stay safe and warm , we had a mini ice here in AR first part of the week, a few flurries, then this mess moved up to you guys, Maine to Texas, i have a totally electric house and would have a mess if the power goes out,do have a wood fireplace tho, and portable LP heaters if it ever gets really bad, hope you had some kind of backup for heat. would say stay cool ,,, but that would be the wrong choice of words. take care, PS i am surprised they got the power back on so fast , good work... Butch 194 #4 Posted December 13, 2008 The news says 1 million homes without power. I remember about 10 years ago that happened in upstate NY and my parents were without power for 2 weeks. They were lucky enough to buy a generator. I remember reading about people buying all the generators from other states and taking them up there to gouge all those families who were in need of them but were all sold out. Many were selling the generators for 3 times what they paid. My parents didn't have any alternate forms of heat so they had to worry about their hot water baseboard heat freezing and breaking the copper lines. Plus they had a well and you can't get water without electric which means you can't flush toilets. I wonder how many people on this forum are without power. Maybe we need a roll call! But then again some of these nuts might be out pushing ice! :hide:

Rollerman 290 #7 Posted December 13, 2008 Micah hope all is well with you & your neighbors power now. Just remember if you need to use salt to get the ice up....have someone else blow/push it off. You don't want the Horse to rust.
Duff 206 #8 Posted December 13, 2008 Heck of a mess here in New Hampshire, too. At one point we had 175,000 people without power - and we're a small state! The utilities have all said it's the worst storm they've seen in over 30 years. We were blessed to keep our power, but we're only 1/2 mile from a generating station. Others not so lucky.... Storm did tell me one thing - when I get 312-8 #2 rebuilt, she WILL have a plow attached (already in stock, thankfully)! My snowblower wouldn't touch this slop and the my driveway now looks like the aftermath of some kind of war game. Thank God me and the wife both have FWD's! Micah, glad you've got power back; hopefully no significant damage to your property? Duff :hide:
Teddy da Bear 11 #9 Posted December 13, 2008 I saw the storm on the weather channel. Looked like it would last for several days the way it was streaming up toward the northeast. From the description you gave...... I think of all those poor folks with solid blocks of ice in their drives.......basically trapped. My browser news said that Baton Rouge had snow! MaineDad 87 #10 Posted December 13, 2008 I have a woodstove and generator for backup. Back in 1998 when we had the ice storm, we were without power for 17 days in January. After 8 days without power back then, I was one one of those famliies that paid way too much for a generator Glad I have it now. Duff - the plow is priceless for pushing slop. Glad I have multiple horses :D
Nick 13 #11 Posted December 13, 2008 No power for 17 days! Several years ago our power went out for 3 days during an ice storm and I thought that was bad. One thing I did learn was to watch if they declare a "Disaster". FEMA might pay for generators or other costs associated with the storm. Several neighbors bought new generators during that outage and had them at least partially paid for. Had I known that I would have bought one also. This reminds me, I got to get back on the generator project. :hide:
Teddy da Bear 11 #12 Posted December 13, 2008 I've got 3 generators now. One 6,500 watt, one 1650 watt and of course my 3000 watt wheel horse generator. Now I have them all......our power never goes out. Can't decide if that is a good thing or bad? Kinda like wishing for snow so a guy can plow!
HorseFixer 2,013 #13 Posted December 14, 2008 I hate this ice crap. Give me 3 feet of snow anytime! I hate it too! Just came in from the stable and were getting freezing rain here I don't have a generator at least a portable but I do have one in the motor home future plans will be back feeding a circuit into the house for the nessasities. I had a Brand New Miller Blue Star Portable Welder at one time but like a Dumb Ass :imstupid: let a guy talk we outta it!
