The reason why I don't like Windows

Recommended Posts

Okay, just a :D Last Wednesday, December 3, I leave work and "restart" my PC like I always do. Thursday morning I come in early (I have an all day thing at The Leadership Center) - no problems with my PC. Friday morning I come in and I can't login to my PC. Windows hangs up and won't let me in. I called my company's IT staff and they send a guy over who diagnosis the problem, hard drive crashed.

Now, this is the second hard drive crash I had (first one was on my home HP pc - another story of why I don't like Windows). We use Dataprotector here at work, so after the new hard drive is installed I spend all day retrieving my files, only to have about 5% retrieved. :hide: Okay time to go home.

Fast forward to today, I come in and it locks up while I'm logging in. So I reboot and login again. Call IT support again, and reset my Dataprotector to the latest upgrade, retrieve my files (only about 50% gets retrieved, but that's significantly better than Friday's).

I have several applications missing, all my network server's I need gone, my archived mail gone..... :omg: I go to our company's link to download corporate software, i.e. Unigraphics, Teamcenter, etc. I used my license software to download Canvas, my spaceball driver, etc. I begin work.

But, I can't open up my UG through Teamcenter so I will be placing another call with IT support. I still don't have my drives networked yet, I need to go find the printers, where's my archived mail, etc.

I'm sure glad I have a Mac at home now.

Sorry, just need to :omg::party::D Here's what I should do with this PC: :hide:

I had Windows XP and it was fine. I upgraded to Vista and have had problems ever since. It isn't the first time that I ever had problems with windows. I had problems prior to XP. My next computer will probably be an Apple.

I build all my own pukers and do everything just the way I want. I try and buy all good components when I put one together. I use XP on the operating system and it usually works pretty good. I hate Vista as it is a memory and resouce hog. I build a new machine every two to three years and recycle my other stuff ie give to the kids or whatever use my next oldest machine as a spare and try to back up every so often. :hide:

Even the IT guys where I work aren't really thrilled (and I'm really understating it) with Vista. :D

I've got XP Pro at home and in my office and am very happy with it. :omg:

Actually, I haven't talked to anyone yet who's pleased with Vista. :hide:

Hmmmmm...... :omg:

I am. I love it. Took along time to get used to but I havent had any issues with it. I feel memory is the key with Vista and with over 2000mb of ram I feel it has helped. Everything I read before I got this computer said is was bad but I decided id give it a chance.

My company uses XP Pro - I'm sure they don't want MORE problems by switching to Vista. :hide:

I own a little pc shop here in this one :hide: town.

I've seen just about everything. I had a pc come through here that I had to use carb cleaner on the fans, just to get rid of the nicotine build up from the owners smoking. The fans wouldn't turn and everything got hot and shut down.

The best way to keep everything 99% safe and backed up, is to set up a pc with a thing called RAID 1. (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks ).

Lets say you have two 100 gig hard drives. Put them in a RAID 1 array. This will allow everything to be written twice. So you will be running two 100 gig drives, but only 100 gig of it is usable.

That way if 1 drive ever fails, you just replace that drive and before boot up you hit "rebuild array raid 1. Everything will be back to normal after that..hopefully.

It does take a special motherboard or add-in card to do this, but no biggy.

Or you can add an extra drive for storage. That's what I do. I put anything and everything important over to the second drive. It shouldn't fail as quickly as the drive running winders, because it's not being used as much and used only for storage and not for running applications.

I am currently running XP and Vista. I have to say, if you have a monster machine built to the max...IMO, Vista rocks out pretty good. I haven't had a crash in a year or so. Even then I got it all back. I love XP, don't get me wrong. I was just ready to move on.

Winders 7 will be out within a year, so we'll see how that goes. :D

:hide: I have a desk-top with XP and a laptop with Vista. when i bought the laptop it had vista installed and it was pure hell trying to work with, the thing was nothing but trouble :hide: it was always messing up and they do not include a recovery disk with a new pc, tried to get xp put on it and couldn't so went to the BX and bought another version of Home Primum Vista, with upgrade,(it seems that vista installed on new pcs do not have the correct upgrades) i installed the new version of vista and all problems have gone away, works great now and i have installed it on my desk top, can't wait for Windows 7 to come out. the onlly problem i have is Dial=Up. DSL not available in my area , planning on getting satalite hopefull for Christmas,(note to Santa read this) :D (btw, plan to be on the pc all day,it's freezing rain today, not going outside, looks like glass covering everthing)

Jerrell,

Freezing rain? I'm to your north (south of St. Louis) and it's been all rain here today, so far. I'm sure it will start to freeze later this evening when the temps drop.

:D Yep T-Mo, freezing rain yesterday, just little pellets and some on the lower limbs , not much, but this morning we are having snow flurries, not sticking or even covering the hood on the cars, trucks. weather report said flurries through out day, :hide: not enough for the plow but i got it ready  maybe wishful thinking, we don't get a lot of snow, only about 1 or 2 in every couple of years, last big one was 14 in in 1981, we usually only get ice down here i just wonder what this means for the rest of the winter, has anyone read the "Old Almanach(ms). it just seems this winter is coming earlier this year.

An update: The new hard drive crashed again - last Friday, the December 12, after only been in the PC for 7 days. Another two days of retrieving my data, downloading company software, restoring my email account, email encryption, etc. Hmm, the old iMac at home still going strong - that is if I can keep the grandkids from moving things around. :hide:

I have an old desktop that is really only used to connect an old parallel port laser printer (that I really like) to my wireless network at home. Its probably 8 years old, runs Windows 98, and once in a blue moon I'll sit down and use it. The thing is awesome! Fast, boots up in about 40 seconds, never crashes, prints when you hit print, shuts down when you tell it to, etc etc. I havent had the Vista experience yet, but I'm not sure there is any benefit of XP over that old Win 98 machine....
