engineguy63 238 #1 Posted February 17, 2016 (edited) Looking at a C101, 42" rear discharge deck. 10hp kohler probably the correct original, but no plow or blower...just the mower deck. Will the 10 hp be good enough for pushing snow and maybe running a thrower?? I also would like to mulch mow my lawn....currently I use a ex mark 42" wich is WAYYYYYY more than I need but wow can it mulch. Were there mulch kits for these older machines or would I have to get creative and make some sort of blocking plate. And of course has anyone on here made up a mulcher and can give advise?? OR should I just be patient for a 14-16 hp to come along??? Thanks Edited February 17, 2016 by engineguy63
russellmc301 600 #2 Posted February 17, 2016 10 hp is enough to plow snow and use a thrower. i have always had the blower on the c-160. but for the blade 10 is more needed
608KEB 796 #3 Posted February 17, 2016 (edited) Even though the 520H is my favorite WH. If I had to be practical and could have only 1 Wheel Horse. I would take a B100 auto or 8 speed. Or a C100 8 speed. It's enough h.p. for my suburban driveway in the winter. I ran a blower on my 74 B100 auto for 3 years. I also like it to for mowing, because it's not as heavy and easy to steer. I put a 36" RD deck on it. I like where the Hydro stick is located on the B100 auto too. It also maneuvers with ease.I have over 1 acre to mow at the farm. I really like the 520H for that job. WHX?? 50,899 #4 Posted February 17, 2016 Only an acre?!? I can't wait to tackle my five with the 520/48"....10 hp will do all that and more but to mulch you might have to alter the deck. Not a big mulcher myself. It's probably more in the deck than it is HP pending how long your grass gets between cuts.

rmaynard 15,963 #6 Posted February 17, 2016 The C-101 should have a K-241AS engine. Same engine as the K-241S but with a smaller oil pan to fit the cradle mounting system. Because it only holds 1-1/2 quarts of oil versus 2 quarts in the K-241S, be sure to check the oil level a little more frequently, especially if there is any oil smoke noticed. As to it's ability to cut, push, and throw, the 10 horse power Kohler is a true worker, and I don't think you will be unhappy with the performance. One caveat though, using a snow thrower on a 10HP engine while going up even a modest grade, may bog down under that type of load.

When I use a 36" deck it takes about 1:45 minutes to mow. Edited February 20, 2016 by 608KEB

shallowwatersailor 3,214 #9 Posted February 17, 2016 Just like Bob said, the 10HP engine is just right in most cases. I used my C-105 for pushing snow last year. It should be able to power a single-stage snowthrower but not the two-stage snowblower. With regards to the rear discharge deck, it is handy for trimming around a "busy" yard but the grass that is discharged is longer than a side discharge as it is cut and discharged. It doesn't get a chance to work through the deck.
MalMac 1,332 #10 Posted February 17, 2016 You can't go wrong with C101-8. They are a no nonsense tractor. Plenty of power to do just about anything you put before it. Out of all the tractors I have, I use my C81 and C101 the most. That 10hp will have no trouble with that 42 in under normal mowing conditions. I mowed with a 42 sd on my 101 last summer. Enough power yet very easy on fuel.
can whlvr 993 #11 Posted February 18, 2016 I have a 101,rebuilt her a few years ago, every bolt including tranny came off this girl,i rebuilt the engine, new piston, rod, rings, bore the whole deal, she is a good runner and very stout for a small engine, but for large snow falls the 42 single stage is a little too much, shes in the govorner too much for my liking, but as far as the rest, grass cutting as long as you arnt bush hogging she will cut fine and plowing its more than enough,i would get both, the 10 horse and the 16 hotse, heres a pic of the 78,c101 in her new outfit, and one of her original

Tankman 3,520 #14 Posted February 18, 2016 I've plowed snow, turned earth, mowed an acre of grass while towing a sweeper. The old Horse had 8 hp. The Stallion never quit.
