Removing a GT14 steering wheel

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.  I'm trying to remove the steering wheel on my GT14.  I've got the shaft bolt out and soaked the shaft and keyway with PB Blaster.  It'll wiggle, but won't pull up.  Appears to be on a keyway, but there is a hole through the hub down on the shaft.  Doesn't appear to be a rolled pin in there.  If I use a puller, it will damage the wheel.  Any suggestions on how to pull it?  Going to need one of Glenn's dash panels, mine is broken.

See if you can rent or borrow a device called a "Bearing Splitter from an auto parts house or rental center, put it under the steering wheel and pull on it.

Thanks!  I didn't even know there was such a thing.  Learn something new everyday.  That's why I like messing with stuff - only way to learn and gives you satisfaction when you accomplish something.

HF sells a kit that has one in it. Depending on rental costs or if no one near you rents one, it might be worth considering....

Here's how I  got mine off ..... hoisted the whole tractor by the steering wheel  and pounded the shaft out.

You wouldn't think it would be so tight! I've removed antique car wheels with less trouble:auto-swerve:

  • Well, you've heard of a BFH?  How about a BOS?  That's a Big Ole Screwdriver:banana-linedance:. I took a flat blade screwdriver with about a 14" shaft and started prying around the wheel hub.  Once it started to move, I used my BOS and a regular screwdriver to keep it working up.  Cleaned the shaft and coated it with anti seize so I don't have to go through this again!!!  Guess I lucked out this time:woohoo:

I would think if it will wiggle, it should come off. Just keep soaking the penetrating oil to it.
