Need help with Part identification - GT14

Recommended Posts

Aldon

All,

I want to replace the lug nuts on my GT14.

I looked at the manual and despite my misgivings ordered a set based on the information therein. The manual denotes 7/16-20.

Well this is incorrect. The actual lug nuts are larger, albeit with fine thread.

Bolt sizes are not my forte though.

So does anyone know what the correct size is for me to order for the rear lug nuts? I know they are 1 inch long.

The pic is of the manual and the incorrect info:

Mistake somewhere.

This is an original 1971 parts list and the GT-14 is the 1GT model

The 1487 is a 9/16"-18 in this list

The 1004 is 7/16"-20 in this list

This is where the 1487 stud shows up

https://www.partstree.com/parts/toro/parts/1487/

Mostly D-Series Auto models and the C-195 Auto.

The reason the GT-14's don't show up is because Toro pulled the parts lists for them a few years ago.

At almost $9 each are they ever proud of them. Have you tried an automotive jobber?

Another thought is to use a long threaded bolt from the back and add a regular 9/16" wheel nut on the front side.

WHX??

I'm thinking 1/2 -20 can check when I get home or sure somebody can confirm me. Could be 9/16-18 but I would doubt they would be 5/8-18.

Thanks gents.

They are unique for sure. Although obtainable once I can figure out the correct size. So hopefully someone will chime in with confidence.

Hardware is dang pricey these days.

Guess I can place an add for the 10 7/16-20 x 1 inch stainless bolts I ordered. 21.06 plus shipping. Easier and more expedient that sending them back and that's assuming they'd take them.

While it will not sink me financially, i cant keep spending 20's needlessly or in error:-)

The 9/16"-18 fine thread uses a 33/64 drill bit to drill the hole before threading. You likely won't have a 33/64" drill bit but try a 1/2" drill bit in the threaded hole. A 1/64" of wiggle room and you have 9/16" -18 threads.

Tap drill for 1/2" -20 fine threads is 29/64"

Tap drill for 5/8" -18 fine threads is 37/64"

Mine are 9/16-18. I noticed you ordered cap screws, they will work if you are coming from the back side and installing lug nuts otherwise you will need lug bolts. At posted by Tractorhogg.

Agreed. That was plan. Figured as long as I was getting new tread and wheels powdercoat end I would splurge for bling.

I hve already sourced zinc bolts and chimed lugs so I am not giving up on Bling:-)

Not to mention that these 15 inch rims and turf tires are way heavy to be trying to hold up and align the lug bolt into. As such, this may work as a much appreciated mod from original. When I was ten years younger I would call me wimpy. Hahahah
