Not sure which...but, based on that engine, I'm pretty confident it's one of these guys here.   :confusion-shrug:

550 1960 Lawn & Garden Tractor Surburban 4-Speed Tecumseh H55B-1170 5.5 Wheel Horse 5010

551 1961 Lawn & Garden Tractor 551 4-Speed Tecumseh H55D-2113 5.5 Wheel Horse 5007
502 1962 Lawn & Garden Tractor 502 4-Speed Tecumseh HT55C-3088 5.5 Wheel Horse 5025
552 1962 Lawn & Garden Tractor 552 4-Speed Tecumseh HT55C-3089 5.5 Wheel Horse 5025

H55B-1170

H55D-2113

HT55C-3088

HT55C-3089

Check and see if you can find any of these numbers on the engine.

Engine won't tell you much about the tractor model.

Looks like a replacement engine to me.  The recoil looks like it's from the 70's and it looks like a Briggs, which I don't think even came factory on these.

Solid firewall means it wasn't an electric start either.

Also looks to have the earlier foot pads and 1960 brake pedal.

Can you post up a picture of the throttle/choke levers and a picture of the rear end?

I'm betting it's a 1960 400.

Also looks like a solid seat pan which would be early 1960.

:text-coolphotos:   Looks like  it is a 400 or 401, show us a photo of the hood from the driver's end so we can see the throttle/choke set up.

WHX??

Suburban fer sure...My money is on it being an early '60 400....a zoom in on it there looks there might be the two levers minus the handles  on the dash, solid seat pan. Definitely not a Clinton which might have  have been on it but not a Kohler either..:confusion-scratchheadblue:

Is that a bottle opener on the side of the hood?????  Good accessory.

Nice D160 in the background!  Very clean.

Its a 1960 Suburban 550. It has the solid hood stand. Hood should have the slide throttle and choke controls. Engine should be  Tecumseh /Lauson H55. Carburater should be a downdraft Tillotson.

Formariz hit the nail on the head -- 1960 550

The 400 and 550 are the same exact tractor with a solid firewall but they used different engines. 550 would just have the extra stuff for the electric start

A 400 would've had a Kohler K91 and a few were made with a Clinton B1290. Both pull starts

A 550 would be electric start with a Lauson/Tecumseh H55 and the key would be just where yours is.

I'm going with a 550. Of coarse it is always possible someone could've changed engines from a Kohler to a Lauson but it would still be factory correct.

The transmission went from a three piece to a two piece # 5007 and the choke/throttle controls were changed from the levers to the pull type. May be others that I'm not aware of.

Some more differences are the hood & hood stand, pedal & linkage, carburetor & air cleaner, foot rests, location of battery and the often over looked, # of holes in the original front rims. Usually won't see a solid seat on a 551 but either type on a 550. There was a list made some where about ALL the differences but with 953's comment, that about covers the obvious changes.

A year? ....sorry Rules couldn't resist be a smart @ss:ychain::roll:... would be interesting to find that list John mentioned, I looked with no luck.

Is that your 551 Richard? It looks like it has the turn to lock style controls on it, were they OEM  on a 551? ....Nice :handgestures-thumbupright:

No, it is an image from the "Gallery" on here, just used it to show the choke/throttle differences.
