Congratulations on beating the addiction Craig! It will be five years for me in May this year. Glad you didn't have to get the same motivation to quit that I did. :handgestures-salute::handgestures-thumbup::handgestures-thumbup:

...January 6, 1996...after 17 years smoking a pack a day, I chose this day to run out of cigarettes.

So, for me, the blizzard of '96 was a good thing...as I fought my way through, and haven't touched one since.

Twenty years now, nicotine free... :text-woo:

@AMC RULES Congratulations!

I don't have any bad habits, (as I sit here about 1/2 crocked on COORS LIGHT!) Had the day from hell at work today!

I never had that bad habit, but my dad, sister, brother, daughter, son, step-daughter all do!

Dad always said, "When cigarettes get up to $1 a pack I will quit....Yeah, right!

Funny...I said I would bail at $2.00 a pack...

and I did it too.     :greetings-clapyellow:

I can only imagine what they cost now???  :dunno:

Cigarettes have an average cost of $5.51 with the price in most states being between six and eight dollars. This number is taken from the combined prices of all of the states but the actual numbers varying greatly with the most expensive cigarettes costing on average $12.85 (New York). Overall smoking is an expensive habit and in one year in New York it is possible to spend over $4,690 for cigarettes alone.

The main reason for the extreme prices of cigarettes in New York is the cigarette tax. The state imposed a tax that comes out to $4.35 on every pack of 20. In addition to the cigarette tax there is a New York state sales tax which adds on $1.60 to the price. The cost mentioned earlier of $12.50 is just an average of the state’s cigarette prices and some researchers have found prices all the way up to over $14 a pack. Some people speculate these high prices are to help dissuade people from purchasing cigarettes and to start on healthier habits.

$2 a day for 20 years is $14,600!

I love hearing all the quitting stories! I only smoked for a year or so at the age of 18/19....but my part time job pumping gas that paid me $3.50 and hour in 1982-83 (Connecticut minimum wage was $3.34) wasn't enough to keep gas in my Chevy Vega, maintain the car insurance, food in mine and my girlfriends stomach, etc etc....so something had to go. My new smoking habit was terminated....what a blessing!

Mike.........

Congrats to all you guys that quit. You did yourself and your family a very big favor. For you guys that are still smoking, don't beat yourself up but try to stop for your health. I quit in 1970 after about 5 years of smoking. If I remember cigarettes were around 25 cents a pack. It wasn't easy, just went cold turkey ( was very hard to do ) and it worked. I can't stand to be in a room with someone smoking. Like Craig, I have sinusitis and the smoke gives me an instant head ache. Not trying to put down anyone that smokes so please don't think that. It's just that I've been there and I will never go back. Hope this helps someone.

Its been 12-13 years (never really celebrated the anniversary), took up cigars about 7-8 years ago and quit them about two years ago.  I wont lie, I miss them!!  I enjoy the smell of smoke most of the time, just not the stale smell that lingers on a person.  What I don't miss is the

control they had over me.  I don't miss the "need", the look of condemnation from non-smokers, and the cost (around $4.50 when I quit).  At Christmas I turned down a cigar that I wanted, but I don't ever want the 'need' to have one again, so if that means none, then none it is.

For those of you who want to quit, just do it. You'll probably fail the first, second, third time but keep trying, cold turkey is the best way in my opinion.  I did try that drug Chantix (I think that's how its spelled).  Spent $300 on it, and flushed probably $250 worth of it down the toilet - messed with my dreams something horrible.  I've learned its like riding a bike, learning to walk, etc - you'll fail the first few times (took me 3+ months from the original date I said I would quit), but if you stick to it, you have to succeed.

Smoked 2+ packs a day for over 20 years. Quit for good Sept 23 1985. Had a bunch of heart tests done last fall and they showed that at one time I'd been a heavy smoker. Heart's in good shape but still shows that I smoked 30 years ago. Wow. For those who still smoke, you'll quit when you're ready and not a minute before.

Congrats Craig, and anyone else that has quit or is trying too. I quit back in 1972. Cold turkey.

Found another good reason with this spinal fusion surgery that I had. Surgeon said that if I smoke, I need to quit at least 30 days prior to, and not smoke after, as smoking interferes with the fusion of bones.

So for all of us Titanium Rangers, that's a good enough reason not to smoke, and if you are thinking of becoming a Titanium Ranger, a good reason to quit.
