Unscientific Prediction on Winter

I know that everyone is wondering about Winter for this season. My area is predicted to get between 25" to 50" of snow. But the weather report is saying 70+ degrees on this coming Monday, December 14.

 

It got me thinking about my dogs noses. Both dogs were/are Alaskan Malamutes and like some Northern Breeds, their noses turn pink during colder months.  Last Winter was colder than I have experienced during my time in Maryland (I've experienced much colder temps in Illinois!) and had a decent amount of snow. Oke's nose had turned turned pink by October 21 last year. Juno's nose is just starting to turn this week. It might be a milder Winter!

Has anyone checked out the Woolly Worm predication?  In July of this year I saw one that was solid black, that means a bad winter.

It is a PA. thing, a large group of individuals meet once a year in the fall to discuss and investigate the width of the black stripe on the back of a Woolly Worm. The wider the stripe determines the forecast for winter. Ok guys from SW  PA chime in and help with the explanation. AMC Rules I am not joking, the Radio in Bedford PA announces the results.

Yep. I'd go with the dogs nose weather forecast over the meteorologists as more scientific every time. I hear a dogs sense of smell is so keen they can help find medical problems in humans. They are amazing creatures. You can't get a more true love than a dog has for its owner. No wonder dogs are mans best friends.

That is a Wooly Worm , they may be small but the predictions are usually accurate.

I thought there were 13 rings of hair on a Woolly Worm, 1 ring for each week of winter.

The color indicated the weather for that particular week.

 

Wait until April and I will tell you what kind of winter to expect!

I knew that we have discussed the woolly worm before...check out this thread from the winter of 2009.

We call them Woolly Bears here in Ohio. Below is a link to a local Cleveland weatherman Dick Goddard who has been predicting winter severity for 43 years now. Probably the longest running annual Woolly event in the country I'm guessing.

 

I also didn't know that about the dog's noses. It turns out doing a google search there are many different cool ways people predict weather.

I knew about the Wooly Worms....but really haven't seen many this fall.

Normally I run them down with the roller by the thousands, they seem to be drawn to warm asphalt?

Maybe they all migrated north, because it's not feeling very wintery here in north central IN.

The grass is still growing!

 

Oh & I had to go take a look at Lexi's nose....still black, but she's half Malamute/half  German Shepard.
