B-80... do you think it smoked?

I have a 1976 B80.  61-08K803.   I got it running today ..... well, it ran really good with the exception of the oil dripping out of the muffler.  And it filled the garage with smoke.  But it ran like there was nothing wrong.   Maybe a little piston slap....  the piston does move around pretty good.  here's a couple pics.  Should I fix it, scrap it or sell it!

:twocents-02cents:   If it runs it is rebuildable, How is the cylinder wall? Presuming no deep gouges and not badly worn you may be able to hone it and rebuild with a piston and rod kit. Even if it needs to be bored out It will be better than a replacement engine.

I saw Charlie (Clintonnut) put a set of chrome rings in an old Clinton at the big show in PA. The cylinder walls were rusted and pretty bad. No Cleaning no nothing done, just those rings. He started it up and thing smoked like a chimney. Just let it run on the ground for a while and it stopped by the time it went through a tank of fuel, plus it was running real nice. That engine was sold before it ran out of gas.

I have a 8hp Kohler that looked the same I cleaned the carbon out of the head and changed the oil with half Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer and the rest 30wt and it only smokes on start up and then goes away been using it like this for years it does go through spark plugs a little faster but it runs so good

Yeah ... I think boring and rebuilding it is the way to go.  The cylinder wall is nice and smooth.   I hate to scrap or piece-out something that can be saved.  Actually the whole tractor isn't bad.  But I can tell that this engine was either worked on before or is not original.  Choke was hooked up wrong (hole), broken bolt in the PTO race retainer and an aluminum screw that looked wrong.  But this will wait until spring.   This B-80 will probably donate the Uni-drive to my C125 plow tractor that had a problem last winter.  It's patched-up so it should make it another season.   I didn't know a B80 had an 8-pinion diff and 1-1/8" axles in it until today.   I'm almost certain the last B80 I had was 1" axles.  Now I won't have to take the Uni-drive out of the 416-8 that I got a few weeks ago just for the Uni-drive.   BUT I could put the plow on the 416 along with the K301 from the C125.    The K341 is OK but I trust the C125's motor.  I have all winter to think about it.

I just found this info ....

There are two different B80's short frame and long frame, the long frame had the 8spd short was a 4 spd

My 82' 10 HP Kohler smokes on start up, but settles right down after a couple minutes.

After changing the oil with Shell Rosella T1 SAE 30 (suggested elsewhere on this site) it smoked like mad for a few minutes, then ran like a champ...Oil hadn't been changed in 3 years from previous owner - sat for that whole time dirty. New oil "cleaned" it out...

N3PUY  When I bought my 1057 the piston so bad you all most put a credit card down the cylinder. It was almost 30 over. But it is new now. They all can be saved.

Is it possible it is over filled with oil? Like if the dipstick was changed to the wrong one or missing? And the breather plugged up or installed backwards?
That seems like an awful lot of oil getting into the combustion chamber. Maybe a combination of things like above with worn rings too and a bad head gasket to boot.
Just kinda thinking "out loud" since you said it ran good but smoked. Seems if the compression was that low from extra worn out rings, it might be hard to get started.
I'm no engine expert so just throwing this out there.

Hello John,  I checked the oil before messing with it.  Was near the "full" mark.  Has the correct dipstick... just like my other k181.   I thought maybe overfilled with gas, but not the case.  When It started I thought (hoped) it would clear out because I did put oil in the sparkplug hole when I got it because I didn't know how long it had been sitting.  After running it the oil level on the stick dropped to midway between full and add.   I even tried it with the breather off the engine.  The piston does "snap" from side to side.  And it started really easy.   It is now put away for winter.   Tomorrow I get to service the neighbor's Christmas tree bailer.  And after that the wife gets the garage for the winter.  (Shhhh..... I think the RJ35 will fit throught the basement door!)
