bleau615 0 #1 Posted November 25, 2008 Hi All, I was just wondering what a Wheel Horse would sell for? My dad bought it when my parents got married I believe in 57, 58 or 59. We sold our business a few years back and they were going to get rid of it so I decided to take it and work on it. Well, I've taken some of it apart and it's been sitting in my shed ever since. I just haven't had time to work on it. My brother in-law did get the motor started and cleaned up the frame. I know it's not the original motor. My dad put a bigger one on it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated and I understand since I don't have the full information on it. Thanks,
CasualObserver 3,411 #2 Posted November 25, 2008 bleau615, first, it's always nice to see new people. Second, please refer to this post. What's my tractor worth? This comes up frequently, and it really is impossible to give any sort of value without a lot more specific details. (Pictures really help!) Please post back again soon. If you have some pictures you would like to post and need help with that procedure, please refer to this post. Posting pictures using Photobucket
Michael Bullington 5 #3 Posted November 25, 2008 Welcome to you will find everone has their own opionon about pricing and which is good because everyone has a different motive to what their plans are for the tractor. I like to collect the older tractors only if they are completely original, especially the engine. An engine change is almost a 100% deal breaker for me unless the price is so good I cant resist it..but to the guy next door engines may not matter. so good luck with your tractor Michael
pond195520032003 27 #4 Posted November 26, 2008 Hi and Ditto on what was already said also you will need to post your location as it has alot to do with a sale as people farther away might not be able to purchase it :D
Jim_M 179 #5 Posted November 26, 2008 I keep telling everybody that asks that question, "I'll give you fifty bucks for it". I'm hoping one of these days I'll get lucky. :hide:
refracman 167 #6 Posted November 26, 2008 as in real estate its location and condition. With it not haveing the original motor it'll have to be in good/ exellent condition to worth more than $50. Jim no wonder I never get them I only offer 20 :hide:
bleau615 0 #7 Posted November 26, 2008 Thanks for all your responses. I plan on getting photo's and model # this week then I will post those. I'm in Michigan just outside of Detroit. Just curious, why is the original motor a key factor?
pond195520032003 27 #8 Posted November 26, 2008 because if its the original? means it might have not been touched? its the same as if you would go out and buy a classic car! original is better and brings more, and if its been changed, then not as many people stop to look at it! also when they usually change the engine, then the cutting and altering begins extra holes as nothin lines up, added brackets and missing parts etc. :hide:
Eriks Red horse herd 120 #9 Posted November 27, 2008 My philosiphy in the area of HOW MUCH ITS WORTH is? Its only worth what some one is willing to pay for it. For instance I've been at auctions and seen idiots get caught up in the thrill of the moment and pay big money for a hunk of junk!! On the other hand I've seen things that i wanted but thought would go for way more than i was willing to pay for go for way less. And I KICK MY BIG WHITE SHINY for not getting in on the action soon enough. I try to price them according to what other tractor sell for. ( like newtires or old,new paint or barn fresh, rode ruff or toal rebuild.) I've sold tractors that were cherry! spent alot of time on and never made what I thought I should have. (like time and materials that went into it) And then had tractors that did'nt do a blasted thing to. sell for 5 times more than what i had into it. So in conclusion its only worth what the guy with the deep pockets is willing to pay. WE all would be blessed if we had the wheel horse blue book guide to suckers. bleau615 0 #11 Posted November 27, 2008 Ok, I have some pics and model info of the engine. I couldn't locate the make of the Wheelhorse but if someone recognizes, great! The engine is a Kohler 6.5 HP. Cast Iron Line. Model # K141 T , Serial # 908997 Spec. # 291 03A Again, thanks for all your input. Attached Image

Michael Bullington 5 #13 Posted November 27, 2008 I would be interested in buying your tractor. I have a 60 that I need parts for and this would be perfect....If you want to sell the engine seperate we could work something out on that too Let me know Email me for price discussions...not on the board please. mdbullington@bellsouth.net thanks Michael
pond195520032003 27 #14 Posted November 27, 2008 something looks odd on this one has that raised front look its a 1958 rj58 or 1959 rj59 and should have a 4hp kohler k90 or 91 ! also the hood has been cut off looks like the original diamond tread rear tires if this is all you have then i would guess $100.00-$125.00 tops just my guess and dont take it the wrong way :omg:
bleau615 0 #15 Posted November 27, 2008 The front is a little lifted due to being up on a block. The front tire is actually off. I did buy new tires for the front but just haven't put them on yet. The hood did have to be cut to fit the new engine my dad put in. The engine does run, it basically just needs to be put together and cleaned up. The gas tank attachment is on the underside of the hood if you can see it. We only bungied it into position to start.
Rollerman 290 #16 Posted November 27, 2008 I'm guessing it's a 1960 model 400....I didn't grab my magnifying lense though or run the numbers....but I think those are from the engine. It looks like the front axle may be on upside down...makeing it sit higher. Greg is right about the engine...should be a K91. To bad the hoods cut, but they don't fit around K141's well without a trim. Not sure about the fuel tank being help on with a bungee cord though....maybe the hood din't fit & the tank was removed? :hide:
pond195520032003 27 #17 Posted November 27, 2008 Stephen, if you look real close, the flat axle is on the outside of the frame :hide:
bleau615 0 #18 Posted November 27, 2008 I would have uploaded a higher res pic but it said max attachment 56k.

linen beige 15 #23 Posted November 28, 2008 This is an RJ-58/9. The flat strip hood stand, straight front axle, pinionless steering shaft, and lift rod in the first pic told me that. The hood also doesn't have cutouts for throttle and choke controls like either the 400/550/401/551 did. This one's cut out straight back from the steering shaft hole just wide enough to clear the shaft. The Keyhole in the front top is so that the gas tank filler neck will clear without removing the gas cap.
