FJ_Russo 17 #1 Posted September 28, 2015 So I'm the proud new owner of a new D series, D160 I believe. Its actually a bit of an anomaly to me. The guy who sold it to me said it was a D180. After looking at the engine model its an Onan BF-ms/3268f. I see it is a 16hp and the tractor model 71-160s01-13089 says its a c series but as you can tell it is most certainly a D. Any pros and cons about the engine trans I have in this tractor? Also it is not running, I know its a bit of a gamble but the deck the 3 point and the fact that he said it ran and had good working hydraulics this spring then lost spark gives me hope!! Anyways I wanted to see what thoughts you all had on this tractor, its not my first wheel horse I currently have a 314-8 and my dad has a 1974 c-10. Love these machines they even built our little C series like tanks!! Excited to see what this one will do. Also anyone from the Michigan area have a recommendation on a repair guy that might have some knowledge in wheel horses specifically. And no worries I added a little tractor porn to hopefully help get some responses lol

FJ_Russo 17 #5 Posted September 28, 2015 WOW awesome links!!! Thank you, I was just starting to look through some of them and see what I could come up with for this tractor but you did it for me thank you very much!!
elliot ness 1,916 #6 Posted September 28, 2015 Great machine, welcome to the herd ! The D's are beasts, I love them, and I know you will too. Check the points, fuel pump, and It should run, I like the Onan twins, keep the fins clean and the oil changed and it will last a long time.
JC 1965 1,528 #7 Posted September 28, 2015 That's a good lookin D-160 for sure.
FJ_Russo 17 #8 Posted September 28, 2015 Thanks for all the compliments!! I bought it because the guy seemed trustworthy and I was definitely impressed with how clean it was he certainly took care of her. So a little update this AM I replaced the battery it wouldn't charge, after replacing the battery I was only getting a free spin on the starter no engagement of the flywheel. So I bypassed the key and used jumper cables directly to the starter, that usually would engage the starter but sometimes I still only get a free spin. my thoughts are the solenoid is probably good but the starter itself is bad? Agree???? Also it wouldn't fire until I sprayed some starting fluid into it. it would run for a few seconds start to die until I sprayed it again. obviously not getting fuel, I figure replace the lines probably need it anyways, and maybe the fuel pump? Or would you start with the carb??? When it has a healthy dose of starting fluid it seems to run smooth for the few seconds it does. I also compression tested the cylinders both are just shy of 120. about 118/119 on both so I'm happy with that on a cold engine.

papaglide 541 #10 Posted September 28, 2015 That is a nice tractor. You did good with the 3 pt. Does it have a rear pto?
Racinbob 10,414 #11 Posted September 28, 2015 I would take the starter off and check out the shaft and gear. It sounds like it may be dirty and hanging up. Don't oil it up. I use some powdered graphite. As far as the fuel you're on the right track by replacing the lines. Make sure fuel is getting to the pump. Then make sure the pump is getting it to the carb. Then attack the carb if you need to.
FJ_Russo 17 #12 Posted September 28, 2015 Thanks again guys!!! No it does not have a rear PTO. I wouldn't mind one but for me I think the three point is more useful. So I started tracking down the fuel, took off the lines and noticed a clog, took the air compressor and blew out the clog. It was a piece of gas line that had been eaten away probably from all the alcohol in the fuels now. Anyways I was too anxious to go and get more fuel lines lol So I put them back on and IT FIRED RIGHT UP!!! Still has the starter issue obviously but well get to that. Of course with it running I couldn't help but try it out a little bit. The transmission seems to work great, and the hydraulics raise and lower!! all in all I'm ecstatic I feel like I got the deal of the century!! It does want to die out at full throttle but from idle to half throttle it runs just fine. Now to work on new fuel lines, and getting that starter to work then probably some carb work, I hate carbs so if anyone knows of a guy that lurks around here from MI that might have a recommendation on a good mechanic please let me know. Thanks again for all the advice guys I really appreciate it!!
953 nut 52,176 #13 Posted September 28, 2015 very nice find! As you said, ethenol is the curse of older power equipment. Go to buyrealgas.com and put in your zip code and you will find the location of stations that sell ethanol free gas. Once you have replaced the fuel lines and filter I would suggest putting "Seafoam" in the gas and spray a liberal amount of Seafoam carburetor cleaner in the air intake while running at mid to high RPM. These two will help clean up the carburetor if it is only slightly contaminated. When operating the Sunstrand Hydro you should maintain relatively high RPMs and use the motion control lever to adjust your speed. FJ_Russo 17 #14 Posted September 28, 2015 I will definitely check that out!! Be good for the old outboard as well to run ethanol free gas. I'm starting to tear into this starter, Seems like a ***** to get to I'm removing all kinds of covers off the engine, is this thing kind of PIA to get to or is their a trick I can save some time with? FJ_Russo 17 #15 Posted September 28, 2015 (edited) alrighty so here's where today has gotten me, I replaced the starter solenoid, new fuel lines, all new wiring for the ignition, battery and starter, removed the starter and cleaned. Still getting the same free spin, The gear moves up to engage the fly wheel but the shaft on the starter just spins it does not turn the flywheel. I think its new starter time. I asked Napa about one for this engine and they weren't showing one listed for it. So online shopping I go Anyone got any web site in mind that would have this starter?http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/131232483084?ul_ref=http%3A%2F%2Frover.ebay.com%2Frover%2F1%2F711-213727-13078-0%2F2%3Fkwid%3D1%26mtid%3D%26crlp%3D1_240251%26linkin_id%3D%7Blinkin_id%7D%26sortbid%3D%7Bbidamount%7D%26fitem%3D131232483084%26mt_id%3D%26mpre%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.com%252Fitm%252Flike%252F131232483084%26srcrot%3D711-213727-13078-0%26rvr_id%3D903233990934Can anyone tell me if this is the right starter for this engine? FJ_Russo 17 #24 Posted October 1, 2015 So today the starter came, the starter looked right. I got the engine all apart to get the starter placed and the holes did not line up. I was devastated so I I got to looking at the starters they appeared to have the same housing so all I really needed to do was swap out the mounting brackets. I figured I would either come out a genious or a guy that just wasted a 75 dollar starter. Well some how the mechanic gods were shining down on me today I got both starters apart and was able to fit the mounting bracket on the new starter. Got it all back together and it worked like a charm. Now I was finally able to start the tractor, I changed all the fluids and filter however I'm not sure where the hydraulic fluid is? Is this the same fluid that I replaced in the hydrostatic transmission or is there another reservoir for the hydraulic fluids and is there a filter for that as well??? Anyways on to the tractor it fired up and ran like pure ****. Anything over an idle and it would die I had to leave full choke on or it would die. I began squirting sea foam carb cleaner in the air intake, after a smoky stinky hour or so of spraying sea foam letting the tractor run for a few minutes then repeating it was beginning to run better. long story short at the end of the day I'm running with no choke and full throttle and it sounds pretty good. However if I push the throttle forward it will run full throttle but then if I let off the throttle it will actually back down on its own I'm gonna try and link some you tube videos for you to see what I am talking about. I also got a new seat installed and added a little white to the rims. Its coming along nicely won't be much longer now Now all I have to do is find a plow for it, and a belt for the deck and also hope my electric PTO is working still not sure on how to test or operate that thing even yet LOL
