Onan troubles on the 416

Dad was mowing today with the 1996 I redid for him in 2014. He said it started running rough after mowing about an hour or so, sounding like it was starving for fuel. Eventually shut off and wouldn't restart. I pulled both plugs, and they were ok. Checked for spark...nothing...12 volts to the coil when the key is on and also when starting. No fire in the hole. Fuel in the carb, pump working fine, doesn't fire on WD-40 or carb cleaner either....seems to be a fire issue....Coil? any ideas before I complain more about how much I love Kohler shakers and despise these Onan twins...H-E-L-P!!!

So we're pretty sure it's the coil. Both ohm readings are way off. Appears to be original. So next question.... It's says there's 2 different party numbers 1, for points and 1 for solid state ignitions. Do these have point hiding somewhere I don't know? It's a 1996 tractor with the original engine....

does your coil look like the
one on the test page?
if not it will have different resistance
values on the secondary.
thank you boomer ( the used onan engine parts guy,also NOS and new )

So new coil is good. No fire in the hole yet. Really getting frustrated with this. I hate throwing parts at something until there's success. Tested the pick up trigger (ignition module) or whatever it's called like they say in the book. Key on, turn engine slowly check for change from 1.5 to battery voltage. Well it never gets to either. Stays at .876 vdc no matter how many times I turn it over by hand. Is it bad? I really don't want to spend $300 for this part for it not to be the problem. Another interesting thing, turn the key on, spark at the plug, turn it off, spark at the plug. Crank the engine, no spark at the plug but 12 volts at the coil... What is going on with this piece of junk? I should have built a Kohler....

Oh and another thing. When sitting on the tractor and cranking, the relay on the left pulls in and out as you turn the key on. The relay on the right doesn't pull in. I've swapped them side to side and the result is the same so I would say the relays are good.

Sounds like a bad ignition module but make sure before spending the money on a new one.

And how do I do that? I followed the test procedure and it never switched from 1.5 volts to battery voltage. I stated that in the above post. It stays steady at .876 vdc so how do I prove this module bad before I spend $300 for it and it's not the problem?

  Here ya go. The onan module is essentially a hall effect sensor and can be used to trigger a light bulb on  and off. I like to test both right away. Sometimes cheaper meters really can not test the lower ohm readings of a coil. This will eliminate all other issues and tell you if it is functioning or not. Might as well replace your condenser while you are at it.

Thanks roundhouse. I used my Fluke 117. It's a $400 multimeter. I bet my life on it daily. I think it would read about as accurately as any other high end meter. I'll try to find this sensor and take it off the engine and test it.

Just thought the meter was worth mentioning in general. Should not have to remove to test it. Just ground to the motor. On the other hand. It's a good idea to clean behind the flywheel.

Flywheel is clean. I had it off last year when I tore down the motor and checked last night when I pulled the plastic toro cover off the flywheel to rotate it by hand. I guess I'll see how much progress I make tonight.
