Jake Kuhn 1,579 #1 Posted September 16, 2015 Hi all, This sure seems like a strange post to me but I did end up joining the 520 club! My local show was last weekend and had a guy approach me wanting to sell his. We agreed on a pretty reasonable price and both walked away happy. I have not looked up the year on this one yet but it must be pretty new with the toro decals on it. It has 630 hrs on it which didn't seem too bad to me considering my c175 has 900 now and is still doing great. It needs a little bit of work but nothing major. All the guages except tach work, however it does not want to stay running he has an electric fuel pump on it but it does not want to work right so I will be on the hunt for a correct pump or a kit to repair the one on it(if that can be done) I also am planning to reset the valves and decarbon heads like everyone says too because I definitely don't want to get stuck with the valve seat issue. It should be a good worker and is most likely going to replace the c175 for now.

shallowwatersailor 3,214 #7 Posted September 16, 2015 Looks good, Jake. Something a little bit bigger for a change, and four hub caps too!
JackC 617 #8 Posted September 16, 2015 With a C175 and a 520H you now have two of the finest big twin cylinder engine machines from Wheel Horse. Looks like a huge electric fuel pump on the 520H.A simple vacuum pump of any brand will work as well as another electric pump.
WHX?? 51,749 #9 Posted September 16, 2015 Does this mean you want to sell me one of your round hoods?!?!?
Sparky-(Admin) 23,156 #10 Posted September 16, 2015 As well as valve adjusting and decarboning you might want to consider venting the drive belt guard where the rear cylinder is, get some better air flow in that area.Nice find and good luck!Mike....... Have you done this? I am curious to see how and where on the guard it is done. Edit - found a picture. Like this? Ed Kennell 41,988 #13 Posted September 16, 2015 I drilled mine Brian, then made a housing to collect the heat and pump it into the cab. Cab stays ~ 30F warmer than outside temp.

Jake Kuhn 1,579 #16 Posted September 16, 2015 Thanks all, I may look into the belt guard idea but not sure if I will need to do that for only running it an hr or less at a time. Definitely a great idea though. It does have a very large fuel pump and I'm guessing thats the issue is being too big because it will start up and run for about 2 mins and then die and not want to start again until later. It still has the original on it, but I'm pretty sure if they put this one on its most likely no good. lol Another issue I am now noticing that I got it to run for a few mins is it has no reverse, was not told this by the past owner who said the last time he used it everything worked just a couple weeks ago. It goes fine forward and the mower deck lifts right up so I'm guessing there's an adjustment rather than a bad pump, so if there is has anyone done it with any advice? Thanks, Jake
953 nut 60,013 #17 Posted September 16, 2015 I have a definite preference for the older models, but I would make an exception for a nice 520.
Shynon 7,482 #18 Posted September 16, 2015 Just doesn't seem right Jake has a 520 . Nice score
Theroundhousernr 590 #19 Posted September 16, 2015 Jake , The hydro lever on the column needs to be pushed down in the neutral position in order to be pulled into reverse. Sometimes that "cam" piece gets pretty worn out making it difficult to get into reverse. Lubrication can help but not solve.

bds1984 1,499 #21 Posted September 17, 2015 I looked over that machine, too, but couldn't find the seller to inquire of the fuel system. I'm sure you have it back to 100% soon. Btw, I enjoyed looking over your collection, too. Very impressive. I have a roller 520 if you are interested...
cheesegrader 433 #22 Posted September 17, 2015 Jake,Nice buy. 90-93 520. I agree with the vent in the drive belt guard. a huge amount of heat comes off the rear cylinder when the vent is in.I'm not sure I would want it all back in my cab in winter. The adjustment info is in the eaton 1100 manual. You have to jack up the rear wheels, and make a few simple adjustments to get the proper proportion of forward and reverse travel. If you plan to convert it to foot control, you will have to make all those adjustments anyway.I would also replace all the slotted screws in the cover plates between your legs. They strip waaaaaay too often. Before you spend a ton of time on the fuel pump, check the shut-off valve at your tank, and the little screen in there that can clog. Also consider replacing all the fuel lines, as they break down after 20 years, and throw off debris that clogs the fuel system. You will learn all the little quirks quickly. Once you have it running smooth, you will love it.
cleat 7,257 #23 Posted September 18, 2015 One of my 520's, the HC was doing that as well, turned out to be the ignition module.Hardest part of replacing it was getting the sheet metal all off. If the flywheel would have just pulled out through the large hole in the sheet metal, it would have saved a lot of time.Cleat
Jake Kuhn 1,579 #24 Posted September 19, 2015 Thanks guys, Still sorting out some issues on the 520. The reverse issue was just me not pushing down on the lever, made me feel a little dumb but glad it was something that simple! Now I am finding out I don't have spark. And maybe thats why it ran and then died before. I was playing with it and sometimes it would have spark for a second and then quit. Now I really have no spark at all on occasion it will spark a very little spark. I have checked the coil and it is good as I ran it on my c175 yesterday. However I do now notice it has a kohler coil rather than the onan one. What else is there to check? I know I am getting power to the coil but not getting spark. Is it possible the igntion module went bad? Or could this be a condensor issue? I've been told that condensors are usuallly just good or bad but maybe thats wrong. Any advice anybody has to give me I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Jake
cheesegrader 433 #25 Posted September 20, 2015 Intermittent electrical problems always lead me to check the fuses and fuse block first. That fuse block is a weak point, and has been removed and replace on two of my machines--the two most reliable ones.Second place to look before you spend big money on a coil or ignition module is the 9-pin connector. The 520 electrical gremlins have come to visit!Amazing how often the problems are just corroded connections.
