Just bought my first WH and have a few questions. It needs a repaint and I would like to get as close as possible to original color.Does anyone have suggestions as far as paint codes or supplier?
Also charging problem. It is putting out 12.4 volts at half throttle at battery.I still need to check wiring and connections on regulator.I will be running a single stage snow blower.Any suggestions on operation. Thanks for any and all advice.

Go to Restorations part of forum...there are paint recommendations there..

For red i use International Harvester Red

For "white" I use Ruatolium or PlastiKote "Antique White"

To give an idea what the colors looks like, here's an Electro 12, I recently refreshed then resold and also an RJ I am currently working on..

There could be many culprits contributing to the low-voltage issue.  1)..thoroughly clean ALL wiring connections. 2) test the AC voltage off off of the engine....s/b 25 AC volts or so...maybe more. 3)Remove and Refit the rectifier as it MUST have a solid ground connection and it is MOST LIKELY corroded where it contacts the hoodstand mount.

Welcome!

That's a good first horse! It may be your last unmolested horse looking at your location! :eusa-doh:There's somewhat of a Wheel Horse black hole down there. :laughing-rolling:

Where do I check ac voltage at engine.Under fan housing?
I did remove voltage regulator to check connections. The plug did seem to have overheated at some point but connections were tight..But I failed to disconnect battery before removing and bumped a wire when replacing it.Never saw so much smoke from one wire before.REplaced wore and back to running,Voltage is still12.4.I guess the fan shroud comes off tomorrow.
Thanks for the help.

Tom,

You can check AC voltage at the regulator. Using the AC setting on your meter, put one probe on each wire coming from behind the flywheel when the engine is running. You can sometimes find a good place for the probes on the terminals where the wires hook to the regulator.

Should be about 35-50 vac there when running at full speed.

Thanks,Brandon
I checked the voltage at the regulator terminal and have 48 vac at about 3/4 throttle.Guess I need to find a voltage regulator.

:WRS:     Be sure to remove the wires to the regulator and see that there is no corrosion, won't take much to keep it from working.

All connections seemed clean and tight with no corrosion. The 3 prong plug has been hot at some point. It has a small melted spot on it,but the connection is very tight.

If it looks like something was melted then its probably dead (Technically, if you are electronically inclined it may be repairable, but if not that's OK).

When you look for one, dont be discouraged by sticker shock. There are some off brand ones that work just fine for much less money, do some searching on here for "voltage regulator". I will see if I can dig up that thread...

Finally got back to work on this thing. The three prong on voltage regulator has been replaced and it is charging like it should.I need to replace ammeter because on connector keeps moving around.I think that it is loose internally.Replaced the wire connector but still have to wiggle the wire to start.
I am hoping any ammeter will work?Has anyone here have to replace theirs?

Any 20 amp capable ammeter will work, but i dont know how easy it is to find one to fit in the hole.

Place a wanted ad here, you may get lucky.

You can also bypass it by just connecting those wires together and protecting them from touching anything else if you dont care about the ammeter.
