Shynon 7,435 #1 Posted September 8, 2015 Since a lot of questions about balance gears, here is and example of why I do not install balance gears. This is a k321 Kohler standard bore and crank, no damage to either of them, but the top balance gear decided to vacate the block and left a nasty unrepairable hole in it. Horse46 515 #7 Posted September 8, 2015 My take on it is they are supposed to reduce vibration?
WNYPCRepair 1,875 #8 Posted September 8, 2015 Apparently not very well, if everyone is removing them, and at risk of destroying your engine.
prondzy 3,867 #9 Posted September 8, 2015 They were placed there to reduce vibration in the motor. With shims and pins wearing out they tend to break with too much tolerance. It is far easier to remove them than it is to repair a hole like the one above.
