arrkerr 54 #1 Posted August 23, 2015 Hi guys, I'm looking to add another horse to my collection. I have the opportunity to buy a 312-8 for a good price. The problem is that the owner states "the axle comes out" on the right hand side - apparently it slides out of the trans.I've never torn down the wheel horse 8-speed trans before, but I've watched some very helpful youtube videos of a trans teardown. I can't see how an axle on one side could possibly just slide out. I would imagine the drive gear on the end of the shaft must attach somehow to the axle that drives the wheel, and has detached? Otherwise the axle wouldn't slide out very far at all.I'm hoping someone might be able to identify this problem, and give me an idea if I'm looking at a cheap fix (like a pin replacement) or something major. Obviously if something came apart and has then been thrown around in the trans it could have caused some major damage, so I can certainly ask to test it a bit (jack it up and let the one wheel turn and listen for "bad sounds")?Thanks for the help! stevasaurus 23,274 #2 Posted August 23, 2015 (edited) The axle is splined for a few inches...the axle gear slides onto the spline...a "C" clip is placed in a groove on the end of the axle that holds the axle from pulling out of the axle gear. It is an easy fix, but it is labor intensive...you have to drop the trans and open it. Once open, you can pull out the differential and open that...examine the damage (if any)...place a new clip and put it back together. The old clip should be in the differential, not floating around the rest of the tranny. You may not have any damage...you may have some teeth broken in 1 or more pinions...maybe a bad axle gear. Any of those parts are available for not much money. This is definitely fixable for not much money. In the picture, you are looking at the end of the axle and a bad axle gear...and that pesky "C" clip.If you have a chance to pick up a 312-8 for a good price, I would not let a "C" stop me...might be able to drop the price a little more. We are here to help you through the process and find parts if you need. Edited August 23, 2015 by stevasaurus

arrkerr 54 #6 Posted August 23, 2015 Ya, I'm always torn on what a "good price" is too. I'm spoiled by the c-141 8-speed I picked up for $250 from the original owner and is in amazing original condition shape and is incredibly reliable. Since then nothing has compared. I've always wanted a hydro for plowing, which is all I use the c-141 for these days. My grandfather's b-80 is in dire shape, so I'm looking for something to give to him. I'm torn between picking up something directly for him, like this 312 (they want $375, has a plow and the WH cement weights, but one is chewed up) - I'm thinking $300 tops is what I'd do, or picking up a new toy for myself. c-161 hydro is my dream, missed on at an auction a year ago and can't stop thinking about it - grew up on the "c"s and prefer them over the newer ones. Someone has a 520h for $950 but its got 1600 hrs on it and needs a gasket. The 520 is darn tempting except the hours, and that my plow likely won't fit w/o the extension bracket ($$) - he said he'd throw in a wheel horse plow, but doesn't know if it'd actually fit, and he's bad about photos - so that is a shot in the dark and just a bit too far to drive and check it out on a whim.I'll keep you posted, and thanks for all the help. wallfish 18,071 #7 Posted August 23, 2015 Wow Steve, that gear is missing more teeth than a meth head. What caused that?
stevasaurus 23,274 #8 Posted August 23, 2015 (edited) Sounds like your addiction is not letting you sleep much at night. Thanks for the background. $375 does sound high if it is just the horse...you could end up putting $100 in that trans, depending on what may be broke inside. $300 would give you some money to fix the trans. John, that gear is out of a 10 pinion, limited slip transmission. One of the pinions got caught, not keeping up with the program, and broke some teeth...guess where they got caught. Got the new parts from Mike Biser, and the trans is as good as new. Edited August 23, 2015 by stevasaurus
Don1977 605 #9 Posted August 23, 2015 If the snow plow is in good shape, it with the axle bracket is easily worth $200.
BOB ELLISON 2,981 #10 Posted September 6, 2015 The other thing to be concerned is if the c clip or as i call it a snap ring broke and it was driven on it internal damage of the other gears is possible .i just did a c120 with a hydro and the snap ring did not do any damage to the other gears.it isnt a hard job to open the transmission .you came to the right place for help.i found out how to open trans without pulling it off tractor. But you do have to remove the wheels and hubs, thats the hard part. I saw that same tractor on cl but already got another c160 and 2 plows so i had to pass wife would kill me.
